Ebisu (mythology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ebisu (恵比須, 恵比寿, 夷, 戎) is also transliterated Yebisu or called Hiruko (蛭子) or Kotoshiro-nushi-no-kami (事代主神) is the Japanese god of fishermen, good luck, and workingmen, as well as the guardian of the health of small children.
Ebisu is sometimes referred to as the brother of Hiruko, a Japanese sun god.

Hong Kong Cinema - Hiruko: The Goblin (1990) - Shinya Tsukamoto
Hiruko was his second feature and first for a studio, a more traditional genre picture on the comedic rather than chilling end of the horror scale.
Whilst more conventional than many of Tsukamoto's features, Hiruko is still pretty crazy for a low budget horror flick and this works in its favour as it tends toward schlock rather than shock, with creatures bearing a resemblance to Carpenter's “Thing” and plentiful decapitations and gore flying about.
Reijiro in particular is a great character, genuinely suffering due to the skeletons in his closet and terrified of the goblin fiends, he nevertheless sets himself the task of constructing loony homemade goblin detectors and weapons to try and deal with them.

 [KFCC] Hiruko The Goblin Review
If the name of Shinya Tsukamoto mostly reminds you of power-drill penises, metal rising out of the flesh and all kinds of merging and mutations of the two, you may be disappointed.
Because, what you’re in for here is Tsukamoto’s homage to SF and horror TV serials of his youth: infantile, silly, with thin and irrational plots and a lot of action.
HIRUKO THE GOBLIN is a fine, enjoyable horror-fantasy-comedy, warmly recommended to all those big, but not really grown up boys who cherish B-flicks and comics in which the fantasy is outrageous, ridiculous and fast-paced.

www.TheGline.com: DVD of the Week: (12-01-04): Hiruko the Goblin
That film was Hiruko the Goblin, one of Tsukamoto’s less sung earlier works, and for a good reason: it’s fun and silly and essentially a painless way to blow 89 minutes without too much looking back.
Hiruko was derived from a comic by Daijiro Moroboshi, a manga author who draws heavily on ancient Japanese and Chinese legends for thriller/horror plots, and the movie is essentially a condensed version of a chapter from the annals of one of his recurring characters.
Hiruko is essentially a showcase for a bunch of simply-rendered but nonetheless enjoyable effects scenes.

 Hiruko the Goblin - MJSimpson.co.uk
The plot, such as it is, concerns disgraced archeologist Reijiro Hieda (Kenji Sawada: Samurai Reincarnation, Happiness of the Katakuris) and high school student Masao Yabe (Masaki Kudo) who try to prevent a ‘goblin’ or ‘hiruko’ from opening up a chamber below the school where lots of other goblins live, or something.
Several important revelations seem to come from random discoveries which further weakens the, for want of a better word, plot.
Hiruko: The Goblin is an interesting curio but too little is explained for the audience to actually connect with the story or characters.

Hiruko - Goblin Hunter (1990) was immediately well-recieved among the Japanese public.
The storyline of Hiruko is on the one hand rather dramatic horror and on the other, a good-natured story, ultimately enjoyable by the entire family (though not recommended for young children).
In this sense, it is in some ways akin to Gakkou no Kaidan, also a good-natured ghost story full of traditional elements and innocent humor.

Monsters At Play: Hiruko The Goblin Review
Set mostly in an abandoned (for the summer) high school campus and the woods surrounding it (I've already got you thinking about Evil Dead, don't I?), Hiruko the Goblin is a malevolent spirit that is buried beneath the campus that is currently causing those who straggle around the campus to lose their heads.
The transfer is good, considering that most Japanese horror films from the last twenty years were shot on some kind of heavy blue-washed film stock and Hiruko is no exception to that tradition (which might be why Tsukamoto works so much in tinted fl and whites on so many of his other films)
Hiruko The Goblin is a fun little movie, and even though, as I said, this isn't the kind of movie you'd show a little kid, it did remind me in a way of the Godzilla movies I watched as a kid, so I'd have to say Tsukamoto was successful in his intentions.

hiruko the golbin - review at videovista.net
Based on the book by Dajiro Moroboshi, Hiruko The Goblin (aka: Yokai Hanta - Hiruko) is a bloody farce of oddball heroes facing down weird demons that could be described as Doctor Who meets the Evil Dead.
Love-struck schoolboy Maseo (Masaki Kudou) joins a search for the missing Reiko, despite being afflicted with a number of blistery faces (yes, they are lost souls of the newly deceased) growing on his back.
As the subplots of unrequited love and doomed romance give way to delirious psychic visions, the film improves dramatically, and things get far more interesting when our heroes embark on a dangerous trip into the unknown, to prevent monstrous Hiruko leading a horde of goblin creatures out of their hellish prison.
