In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

  Hirwaun
The main railway station was built to the North of the Village in the Breconshire area and this appears to have stimulated the construction of housing in that area, probably to house railway workers.
The remainder of the Nineteenth Century was generally prosperous for Hirwaun, although in common with the rest of the South Wales Coalfield the area suffered from the boom and bust trends inherent in the Coal Industry.
Hirwaun Ironworks, which was probably the first coke fired iron furnace in South Wales, was founded in 1757 by John Mayberry of Brecon when he leased land for 99 years from Lord Windsor.

Hirwaun came out with all guns firing after the interval and spent a lengthy period in the home twenty two where powerful centre Jones and prop Phil Sedgemore found space and were only stopped by quality tackles from Ritchie, Hanmer and Kelly.
Hirwaun continued to attack, particulary through forward drives but conceded possession with a loose kick which Maclean snapped up to launch a counterattack.

 Hirwaun v Rumney 09.10.2004
Hirwaun's speedy flanker Darren Jones succeeded in making inroads into the visitors' defence but when Darryl Davies was sin binned, Rumney took advantage of the situation to camp in the opposition twenty two and control the forward exchanges there.
After a series of close range scrums the Hirwaun back row were expecting Morris to break wide and in concentrating on the threat posed by the scrum half, left a big gap which Jones cleverly spotted and he neatly dummied over from the base of the scrum.
Following Maclean's conversion Hirwaun may have been trailing by 8 - 30, but they entered their best phase of play and exerted sustained forward pressure which was only relieved when they conceded a penalty.
