Friedrich Hirzebruch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Friedrich E.P. Hirzebruch (born 17 October 1927) is a German mathematician, working in the fields of topology, complex manifolds and algebraic geometry, and a leading figure in his generation.
The Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem (1954) for complex manifolds was a major advance and quickly became part of the mainstream developments around the classical Riemann-Roch theorem; it was also a precursor of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem.
Hirzebruch's book Neue topologische Methoden in der algebraischen Geometrie (1956) was a basic text for the 'new methods' of sheaf theory, in complex algebraic geometry.

This year's Chern Visiting Professor, Frederich Hirzebruch, will be the featured speaker March 5, 6 and 7 at the third annual symposium held in honor of Professor Emeritus Shiing-Shen Chern, one of the century's great geometers.
Hirzebruch is professor emeritus at Bonn University in Bonn, Germany, and served as director of the Max Planck Institute of Mathematics in Bonn from 1980 until his retirement in 1995.
Hirzebruch will follow at 4:10 p.m., speaking on "Why Do I Like Chern Classes?" This opening pair of lectures will be held in Sibley Auditorium, Bechtel Engineering Center.

V.A. Rokhlin was the first who esatblished the simplest case of the Hirzebruch formula in 4-dimensional case.
A year later F. Hirzebruch wrote his formula for expressing the signature of arbitrary oriented manifold in terms of characteristic Pontryagin classes, so called Hirzebruch formula.
The last consequences of Hirzebruch formula are: new short proof of topological invariance of rational Pontryagin classes due to M. Gromov (1995), combinatorial local Hirzebruch formula for combinatorial manifolds due to M. Gromov and author (1998).

Hirzebruch Surfaces and Error-Correcting Codes - Hansen (ResearchIndex)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
For any integral convex polytope in R 2 there is an explicit construction of an error-correcting code of length (q \Gamma 1) 2 over the finite field F q, obtained by evaluation of rational functions on a toric surface associated to the polytope.
The dimension of the code is equal to the number of integral points in the given polytope and the minimum distance is estimated using the cohomology and intersection theory of the underlying surfaces.
