In many cases, the answer is “no”, but in relation to 1940’s His Girl Friday, the reply is a resounding “definitely!” While the clothes and settings show their age, the rest of the movie generally does not, as the material remains nicely fresh and vibrant after six long decades.
HGF adapts the successful stage play The Front Page for the screen with one major variation: one character - hot-shot reporter Hildy Johnson - is played by a woman instead of a man, and her editor Walter Burns becomes not only her boss but also her ex-husband.
HGF featured almost no score; a few brief snippets of music appeared on a couple of occasions but these were so minor that they might as well have been non-existent.

London Theatre Guide Review His Girl Friday Alex Jennings and Zoe Wanamaker 2003
His Girl Friday is an adaptation of Ben Hecht’s & Charles MacArthur’s classic American comedy of the 1920’s “The Front Page” about a Chicago newspaper editor desperate to keep his best star [male] reporter on his paper by trying every trick in the book to stop him from marrying and leaving town.
The play was later re-written as an even more successful film “His Girl Friday” where the journalist was now transformed into a woman, the editor’s ex-wife adding a romantic element to the plot.
John Guare has now combined and reworked these two plots for this modern production of “His Girl Friday”, added a few new elements, and come up with a script full of witty, quick firing one-liners just like the two original works it is based on.

The Friday pub date has long been studied at the two newsweeklies—and sickly U.S. News and World Report—as a way to break away from the pack, but until now none of the magazines has had the courage to make the jump.
One economic advantage presented by the new pub date is the cheaper press time during a weekday as opposed to the more expensive weekend press time that the Monday pub date requires.

Because His Girl Friday is a public domain film (it was originally produced by Columbia in 1940, but their rights have lapsed), there are several versions of the movie on home video, both on videotape and DVD.
Thankfully, we were dead wrong — His Girl Friday is now on DVD from Columbia, and take a close look at that boxcover, because that's the only DVD version you should consider adding to your collection.
Largely considered among the greatest screwball comedies of all time, His Girl Friday actually appeared on film before Howard Hawks made his version, as the story is taken from Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur's stage play and 1931 talkie The Front Page about a dueling editor and reporter at a busy New York daily.

 HIS GIRL FRIDAY
Adapted from a stage play co-written by long-time Hawks collaborator Ben Hecht, His Girl Friday had already been filmed in 1931 by Lewis Milestone as The Front Page (the title of the original play,) a scathing satire of the media, and newspapers in particular.
The story, in both the play and the films, centers on a reporter and an editor who try to get the jump on a big story involving an escaped death row prisoner who probably shouldn’t even be there in the first place.
His Girl Friday is enormously successful in drawing us into the dizzying world of fast-talking reporters, a group that would come off as selfish and inhuman if we weren’t so caught up in it all.
