His Last Bow (story) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His Last Bow, one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of eight stories in the cycle collected as His Last Bow.
The story is the last chronological instalment of the series, though yet another collection (The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes), set before the story, was published four years later.
Fortunately for his and Doyle's reputation, this was not truly his "Last Bow"; the stories collected in The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes would follow.

His Last Bow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His Last Bow is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as the title of one of the stories in that collection.
Indeed, the first seven stories in the collection were originally grouped under the title Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes before the late addition of His Last Bow, a story told in the third person and detailing an aged Holmes' anti-German activities in the years leading up to the outbreak of hostilities in 1914.
Subtitled "The War Service of Sherlock Holmes", there is considerable evidence to suggest that Doyle intended the story to be his last Holmes effort, and that the publication of this collection was meant as a rounding-up of all previously uncollected material to allow the author to concentrate on other projects closer to his heart.

The previous collections were THE ADVENTURES..., THE MEMOIRS..., and THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES; the present volume was not in fact "his last bow," as it was followed in 1927 by the fifth and last, THE CASE-BOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES.
HIS LAST BOW contains eight adventures, including those of "the Wisteria Lodge" and "the Cardboard Box" (which had been excluded from the English edition of THE MEMOIRS in 1894).
It also includes "His Last Bow," in which Holmes comes out of semi-retirement as a wartime undercover agent and breaks up a German espionage ring.
