In the West, the use of cannon was first recorded in the battles of the early 14th century, for instance, at the siege of Metz in 1324, and by the English against the Scots in 1327.
Shotguns were developed as essentially small cannons, having been first named in Kentucky in the 18th Century; their size, expressed in gauge, is expressed in the fraction of a pound that a round shot of a diameter equal to their barrel bore diameter would be.
Cannons in fortified positions, such as the Maginot Line and the Atlantic Wall, were increasingly unable to protect areas from infantry and tank attacks.

However, it is undeniable that regardless of their (probably feeble) physical impact, early cannons, with their noise, smoke, and flames, had a terrifying psychological impact on horses or soldiers who had never encountered the weapons before.
These cannons, combining explosive power with a flat trajectory, were adopted by various Navies from the 1840s, thereby triggering the demise of wooden ships, and the iron hull revolution in boat building.

It soon became apparent that the Navy would be the largest user of the 20-mm cannon; in fact, records show that this branch of the service mounted over 90 percent of the cannon actually placed in American aircraft.
One was that the 20-mm Hispano-Suiza automatic cannon could not be considered satisfactory as an aircraft weapon as long as it was necessary for the ordnanceman to coat the cartridge case with a heavy lubricant or wax.

When these were changed to a metal 3-blade propeller, 1 central radiator and a Hispano Suiza 12Y-29 engine, the prototype reached its designed top level speed, and possessed a high diving speed.
Two further prototypes followed, the D.520.02 and D.520.03, which differed in armament (a moteur-canon 20mm cannon firing through the propeller, and 4 x 0.295 inch/7,5 mm machineguns in the leading edge of the wings), and the.03 version had a Szydlowski supercharger in stead of the standard Hispano Suiza one.
At the outbreak of the War only these three prototypes had flown, and too much emphasis on development and evaluation as well as a rigorous reorganisation of the French air industries delayed deliveries of much needed aircraft.
