  Historia Augusta
Historia Augusta: modern name of a collection of (bogus) biographies of Roman emperors of the second and third centuries.
Of course this means that the Historia Augusta is not reliable as a source for these lives, but it is a very valuable source for those who want to reconstruct the values and ideas of the the senatorial elite of ancient Rome.
This literary taste is older than the Historia Augusta: the first example from the Roman world is the vie romancée of Apollonius of Tyana by Philostratus, which is in turn inspired by the Education of Cyrus by Xenophon.

Roman Emperors - DIR Gordian II
The Historia Augusta claims Gordian II was a student of the homonymous son of the Severan-era author Serenus Sammonicus, but modern historians are extremely skeptical of not only the claim, but even the existence of the younger Serenus Sammonicus.
[[11]] In the biography of Maximinus Thrax and his son in the Historia Augusta, Gordian II is said to have been publicly declared emperor along with his father in Thysdrus before the pair departed for Carthage.
[[1]] Historia Augusta, Gd 15.2 indicates he was 46 when the uprising began in 238.

 Roman Emperors - DIR Florian
The Historia Augusta characterizes the succession as a dynastic coup in which the Senate was ignored, but since Florian like Tacitus issued coins inscribed SC, advertising the Senate's authority for minting them, the Historia Augusta's complaint may be factitious.
Florian's different nomen, Annius rather than Claudius, means that he cannot have been Tacitus's full brother as the Historia Augusta implies; but one passage identifies him as Tacitus's half brother by the same mother, which might be true.
The Historia Augusta claims that Tacitus had proposed a consulate for Florian but too late in the year; given the unreliability of this life, it is better to trust the inscription.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 1999.04.02
L.'s reading of religion in the Historia Augusta can be taken in exactly the same way, suggesting that suppression was a deliberate strategy on the part of the author.
The brief note reprinted from Historia 41 (1992) on possible allusions to the De Rebus Bellicis at various points in the Historia Augusta is a fine sample of L.'s overall approach.
If one is not simply interested in arguments about the date of the Historia Augusta, one can turn to this volume for some good work on Pertinax, Maximinus Thrax (L. is the author of a massive commentary on the Historia Augusta biography) and on the reign of Constantine.

The modern reader is at home in the Historia Augusta."
The Historia Augusta is a compilation of dubious histories that questionably chronicle the Roman Empire in its decline.
Yourcenar seems to be saying that this mediocre fumbling just fits the declining empire itself and is a better history of it than a more accurate one would be.

The correct form of her name is Julia Soaemias Bassiana; on her coins she is regularly called Julia Soaemias Augusta.
It became famous as the scene of a battle between Constantine and Licinius in 323 and of the defeat of Valens by the Goths in 378.
Both these battles seem to be alluded to in this passage, and this has been used as an argument for the theory that the Historia Augusta was written at the end of the fourth century.
