In modern usage, civil engineering is a broad field of engineering that deals with the planning, construction, and maintenance of fixed structures as they related to earth, water, or civilization and their processes.
Environmental engineering is related to the fields of hydrology, geohydrology and meteorology insofar as knowledge of (ground)water and flows are required to understand pollutant transport.
There are also civil engineers who work in the area of safety engineering, applying probabilistic methods to structural design, safety analysis and even estimates of insurance losses due to natural and man-made hazards.

 UNM highlights state engineering landmarks
Five New Mexico historic civil engineering landmarks are being featured in a brochure created by University of New Mexico Civil Engineering Professor Arup Maji and UNM graduate student Jonathan Lucero as part of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 150th anniversary.
The dam was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in April of 1977 because of a variety of significant features, one of which is being the first civil engineering project for the international distribution of water.
The Cumbres and Toltec railroad, built in the late 1870s, encompasses all the challenging aspects of civil engineering as a mountainous railroad—structures, geotechnical, transportation, construction and environmental.

The Virginia Society of Professional Engineers is working with state agencies to persuade them to follow this guideline, which VSPE has endorsed in a position paper on engineers in state government.
Data obtained by VSPE in 2001 show that of 1,124 engineering positions in various government departments, 308 of the incumbents had engineering degrees, 197 had PE licenses, and 66% of responsible charge positions were filled by PEs.
Because the bridge is a historic landmark, all of the engineering and construction had to be approved by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

ASCE established the National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark Program in 1966 to recognize civil engineering works that have made a significant contribution to the development of the United States and to the profession of civil engineering.

 New Jersey ASCE History
The present Coast and Geodetic Survey, at the request of the History and Heritage Committee, relocated this point, which is monument to the skill and fortitude of early American civil engineer surveyors, especially Ferdinand Hassler.
Possibly the oldest metal truss bridge in the nation (1858), this bridge was constructed of cast and wrought iron and demonstrated a major breakthrough in patented railroad bridge design and construction.
This system was the key civil engineering feature which permitted the successful completion of the Morris Canal project in 1831.

 High winds topple historic railroad bridge
MOUNT JEWETT -- Blustery thunderstorms sweeping across the state toppled a historic railroad bridge yesterday afternoon near the Allegheny National Forest in McKean County that was once the tallest and largest in the world, officials said.
State engineers are en route to the bridge this evening, about 110 miles northeast of Pittsburgh on the edge of the Allegheny National Forest, to assess the damage, Leslie said.
The Kinzua Viaduct was on the National Register of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks and National Register of Historic Places.

In this continuing program, Section Committees on History and Heritage propose, with Section endorsement, a nationally or internationally significant civil engineering project which, after a thorough and critical review at the national level, may be recommended to the Board of Direction for designation.

 Wildernet - Kinzua Bridge State Park
In 1977, the Kinzua Viaduct received national recognition when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks.
Park facilities are located at the south end of the bridge and include picnic tables, drinking water, scenic overlook, an interpretive kiosk, an organized group tenting area and a picnic shelter which can be reserved.
