Historic Compromise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Historic Compromise (Italian:"compromesso storico") most commonly refers to the accommodation between the Italian Christian Democrats (DC) and the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in the 1970s, after the latter embraced eurocommunism.
The 1978 assassination of DC leader Aldo Moro put an end to it.
Norberto Bobbio was one intellectual supporting the compromise.

Poland: Behind the Crisis (1982) : Imperialist Intervention in Papal Garb
The term "historic compromise," as used in this context, should not be confused with the so-called historic compromise entered into by the Berlinguer and Co. of the Italian Communist Party, nor in Britain by the Labour Party in the form of the Social Contract.
The historic compromise of which contemporary Poland is the product was conceived more in the nature of a sharing of power among the proletariat, sections of the peasantry, and so-called patriotic elements of the bourgeoisie on the one hand, and the general bourgeois opposition often clandestinely represented by the Catholic hierarchy, on the other.
But the difference between their historic compromise and the one in Poland is that the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy had the common bond of both being property-owning classes and both being hostile to the interests of the working class.

 Part 1
At the same moment that the historic compromise in advanced industrial societies was being forged, a parallel compromise emerged in developing countries in the wake of decolonisation.
Whereas in advanced industrial society the compromise was essentially an exchange between organised capital and organised labour, in the third world the compromise was struck between the state, urban classes (including workers, the informal sector, the unemployed) and domestic and international capital.
The developmental pact, like the northern historic compromise, was underpinned by the same configuration of post-war political and economic conditions, and it was changes in these conditions that led to the unravelling of the developmental pact from the 1970s.

International Crisis Group - 026 Iraq Kurds Toward a Historic Compromise
Kurdish leaders need to speak more candidly with their followers about the compromises they privately acknowledge are required, and the international community needs to work more proactively to help seal the historic deal.
Start preparing the Kurdish public now for the compromise solution on Kirkuk and Kurdish national aspirations that senior Kurdish officials outline in private, including autonomy within a unitary Iraq and a special status for the city and governorate of Kirkuk.
Relinquish the directorates in Kirkuk over which the Kurdish parties took control at the war's end, and cooperate in an equitable redistribution of power in Kirkuk under the leadership of the full provincial council, the CPA and, after 30 June 2004, the provisional government in Baghdad.

One of these is the political turmoil in Israel over the Gaza Disengagement plan, which has not been resolved by the vote in Knesset in its favor, and the other is the acute deterioration of the health of Yasser Arafat, and his departure from Palestine, with seismic implications for Palestinian policy and politics.
The United States, as the only standing superpower, with its established constitutional and historical tradition of the Rule of Law, and the separation of Church and State, is uniquely qualified to act as an intermediary in bringing this conflict to a close.
The energy of young men and women can best be spent to define the elements of the Historic Compromise, to carve out a better future for these two peoples, rather than to dwell on the pain of the present and the past, and by doing so to perpetuate it.

Thinking "Authentic" at the Fortress of Louisbourg: Personal Notes, By Eric Krause, 1996
Historical fiction may appear in their claims, to justify their use of historic Louisbourg, but the writers were clearly more concerned with comedy than with historical fact.
Positive reasoning is the historical corroborative glue which, paradoxically, at the same time keeps the parts both together and from flying apart, so as to work in harmony.
Compromise Options: one corollary which rises from our goal, which states that our job is to maximize the historical accuracy of Louisbourg's reconstructed architectural landscapes, is that our job is equally to minimize the number of historical anachronisms by justifying their use according to a limited list.

Reviewing the experience of Italy in the 1970s, by Antonio Negri
As it happened, the "historic compromise" was built around precisely these "austerity policies" against which the social protest movements were being organised.
Caught in the grip of this crisis, the political process which had created a substantial social stratum of hundreds of thousands of activists and militants was soon to be dissolved by a massive and powerful repression.
The political forces which embodied the "historic compromise" were also searching for a way out of the social isolation in which they now found themselves, but they did it by opting for policies of repression pure and simple.

The compromise, if enacted, will (1) create an “earned  legalization” program enabling undocumented farm workers to earn legal permanent status if they have been working in the U.S. and continue to work in agriculture for a period of time; and (2) reform the existing agricultural guest worker program, the H-2A temporary foreign agricultural worker program.
While this is a historic compromise, it is only the first step to broader reform of our current immigration system.
The compromise also streamlines the process for employers who seek to bring in foreign workers, while providing additional protections for those workers.

The media call attention to historic buildings when they are scheduled for destruction or attempts are made to move them, and this is good.
Whatever they did, and those people who lived in the 1600s, and the generations that followed, they inherited what came before and, I'm sure, did their best to improve their way of life, to preserve the land, and leave something of worth behind for their children.
