  Foreword to Historical Geography
The first objectives of historical field work are to value the habitat in terms of former habit, and to re-locate the former pattern of activity as indicated in the documentary record.
Let protest fall where it may, I should not be interested in historical geography or in human geography except as helping to understand the differentiation of cultures, and I cannot get understanding of this sort except by learning the ways and devices men have used for making a living out of their homelands.
Historically, therefore, it is not the central parts of a culture area that the great developments take place, but on what was both the most exposed and the most alluring border.

Michael Broers | The Myth and Reality of Italian Regionalism: A Historical Geography of Napoleonic Italy, ...
Its first task is to establish the usefulness of terms and concepts drawn from historical geography in this context; it then examines the consequences of a brutally swift change of regime in a definable region where geography was already a seminal influence on political culture.
Geography remains central but not in terms of physical reductionism; regions are not just delimited areas but ones with long-established social and political traits.
Indeed, history and geography mix best, but also most blatantly, in areas where there is a clear frontier, and where crude political expansion has dominated the history of a given part of the world.

Historical Biogeography: Geography as Evolution, Evolution as Geography, by Charles H. Smith
Restricting "geography" and the "pattern of divergence" to conceptually different spaces leads us directly to the brink of environmental determinism; whenever we create artificially distinct spaces to sponsor single process understandings we are looking for trouble.
This reasoning is in effect extended to the spatial arena; as a result, the biogeographical extrapolation of cladistics theory, vicariance analysis, consists, as mentioned earlier, of a literal projection of the history of the divergence patterns of the group under study onto a separately conceived, "geographic", space.
The "geography as handmaiden" approach to biogeography is a contradiction in terms: the distribution of organisms is not assignable to a (prior) geographical space, it is geographical space.
