  1.1.2 periods, phases
It is only for convenience and for the sake of highlighting history that we encapsulate historical process into discrete events: the founding of a city, the death of an emperor, the fall of an empire.
Yet, except in cases of violent termination of physical structures or in the death of an individual, historical events cannot be contained in brief chronologies and in each case, including the sacking of cities or the death of leaders, the significance of the historical event extends both before and beyond its discrete chronology.
Historical periods, phases of culture and epochs of civilization are interpretive tools which we use to make sense of discerned patterns of meaning.

 What Is Historical Fiction?
It may have something to do with the public's on-again, off-again appreciation of history in general, or a general perception that historical fiction is simply another flavor of history, a subject many learned to dread in school.
The writer of historical fiction is first a writer not of history, but of fiction, and fiction is about characters, not events.
So historical fiction is a close relative of history, but not simply a retelling of the lectures we learned to dread in high school.

Thus, many of the historical periods we study in the Caribbean and Latin America were defined between war and war.
As a result, we are almost driven to believe that historical periods will no longer be defined by warlike conflicts as in years gone by, but instead by the occurrence of natural phenomena.
We would therefore speak of the period between the tsunami and the earthquake and between that and the hurricane or the landslide and the floods.

This is the period of the 'Turba philosophorum', and the scholars.

The earlier part of this period was concerned primarily with translation or with exposition of the theory ('scientia') of alchemy.

 Literary periods
Basically, the period concept suggests two things: (1) that literary works can be grouped according to what they share with each other within a given time span, and (2) that this grouping can be differentiated from other such chronological groupings.
Another thing we might try to avoid as we read in, or about a period, is what may be called the "evolutionary fallacy." This involves the claim that a particular period represents an "advance" of some sort or that something "higher" has "evolved" out of earlier, more "primitive" forms.
Each of these major periods and movements is international in scope and designates the system of norms that dominated Western culture at a particular time of the historical process.

Most centrally, as Clare Hanson puts it, "The characteristic fragmentation of postmodernist discourse is the direct result of a confrontation with language as itself problematic.
It is shown that "reality" and "perception" are the constructs of a particular culture and language; hence the emphasis on stereotypes that we saw in several more recent stories, e.g, O'Connor, Munro, Gallant, as though this is all there is.
