Historical works were produced in far greater numbers (10,000 historiographic works in contrast to 3,000 novels in the eighteenth century) and had far more prestige than the novel.
In Britain, another type of ‘historical novel’ flourished in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, in the form of scandal fiction, or the ‘secret histories’ of the amours of historical figures.
Just as historical novelists drew upon the antiquarian interest in manuscripts, and prefaced their volumes as an antiquary would preface a paper to the Society, they also used the scholarly apparatus developed by antiquaries and antiquarian-influenced historians to frame their novels.

Though A Tale of Two Cities begins in 1770 with Doctor Manette’s release from the Bastille and ends in late 1793 or early 1794, the story as a whole covers a much broader period.
From a historical point of view, A Tale of Two Cities gives a rather compressed account of the French Revolution; yet this is appropriate in a novel concerned as much with the lives of private individuals as with public events.
Complete historical explanations will be found in the notes that accompany each issue of this re-serialization.

Fairy tale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fairy tale is a sub-class of the folktale.
Although in the nineteenth and twentieth century the fairy tale came to be associated with children's literature, adults were originally as likely as children to be the audience of the fairy tale.
For instance, tales like Cinderella, in which a persecuted heroine, with the help of the fairy godmother or similar magical helper, attends an event (or three) in which she wins the love of a prince and is identified as his true bride, are classified as type 510, the persecuted heroine.

Amazon.com: The Speckled Monster: A Historical Tale of Battling the Smallpox Epidemic: Books: Jennifer Carrell   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
The advantage of historical fiction is that it allows the author to recreate private conversations and psychological motivations that are often unavailable to historical analysis.
That said, Carrell freely admits to fabricating events and dialogue for which there is no evidence -- the most extreme instance (but one befitting a heroic narrative) is the contrived meeting and friendship between her two heroes, Lady Mary and Boylston, in London.
The result is an enjoyable tale, but the historical truth is buried in the endnotes.

In recent days, I've become rather partial to historicals - The Marian Conspiracy and The Fires of Vulcan rate as two of my firm favourites in the BF collection, and having had a 6th & 7th Doctor historical adventures, this one looked very well placed in the schedule to be a 5th Doctor historical.
Now I know not all historical figures have porridge heads, and I agree it can be long, drawn out and very dull to have the Doctor talk down to a historical character in simple words so they can understand him.
I wanted/expected her to say 'What on earth are you babbling on about Doctor?' But from this point on in the story we were expected to believe that she could understand words that would have been completely out of her understanding.

 ERBzine 0753: Minidoka C.H.A.S.E.R
Minidoka is a captivating, humorous, satirical, and highly imaginative fairy story that presages the ERB talent that was to flower ten years later.
Idaho was the setting for the tale and ERB created two imaginary kingdoms separated by the Raft River and “forever at war.” Burroughs’ facility in concocting names that were unusually rhythmic, colourful, or comical, which was strikingly evident in his later works, both the Tarzan and other worlds series, is noticeable at this early period.
The result is a sprawling fairy tale bright enough to delight younger readers, yet sophisticated enough to entertain adults.

A Spinster's Tale Study Guide by Peter Taylor: Historical Context
With that in mind, it is clear that Taylor is interested in exploring the time when the events of the story take place, rather than when Elizabeth is actually recalling them.
However, as is the case with most of Taylor's fiction, the American South is featured prominently; from a historical perspective, this is important in several ways.
With the story set fifty years before the Civil Rights movement, "A Spinster's Tale" provides insight into the racially segregated South of the first half of the twentieth century.
