Historiographical metafiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to Hutcheon, from "A Poetics of Postmodernism", historiographic metafictional works are "those well-known and popular novels which are both intensely self-reflexive and yet paradoxically also lay claim to historical events and personages".
Historiographical metaficition is a quintessentially postmodern art form, with a reliance upon textual play, parody and historical re-conceptualization.
Definition of Metafiction at Emory.edu An example of Historiographic metafiction is Daphne Marlatt's novel _Ana Historic_.

Robert Luuke -- Artefaction in Gerald Vizenor's The People Named the Chippewa
Vizenor does his rememorating by way of historiographic metafiction, creating what Linda Hutcheon calls a "kind of novel [that] asks us to recall that history and fiction are themselves historical terms and that their definitions and interrelations are historically determined and vary with time" (Poetics 105).
In other words, by using a similar methodology to that which has sidelined Native peoples, Vizenor subverts this methodology by showing us that it is entirely subjective and open to interpretation, and has, in a historical sense, been quite wrong in its assumptions about Native peoples and their cultures.
Historiographical metafiction then questions the truth of its own discourse and the discourse of history itself.

The Antigonish Review 141: Herb Wyile Essay
Marie Vautier has observed that Canadian historiographical novels reflect an abiding but ambivalent concern with nation building (25), and perhaps the most important dimension of Colony is the way in which the fortunes of the protagonists are shaped by the legacy of a history of colonialism.
By introducing the self-reflexive and parodic strategies of historiographical metafiction into the structure of the Bildungsroman, Johnston turns Colony into a postcolonial allegory that questions Canada's and especially Britain's treatment of Newfoundland.
A central part of Smallwood's political education is his growing understanding of the exploitative ambivalence of England's attitude towards Newfoundland, especially the mother country's historical support of a merchant elite whose accumulation of wealth came at the expense of the vast majority - uneducated, isolated, impoverished - of Newfoundlanders.

Speak*easy, but speak less | Review: The Orchard Drive
We saw Chris Grignard's The Orchard Drive last night at the Walterdale theatre, and we left very impressed with both the playwright and the actors in the play.
Orchard Drive is a piece of historiographical metafiction (or, I suppose historiographical metadrama), loosely based on the experiences of the homosexual community in Kelowna.
It centers around an incident in 1997 involving Kelowna's mayor, who refused to proclaim gay and lesbian pride day, thus embroiling the town in a bitter discrimination case.

 Eye Weekly - onpage - 01.16.97
Of course, with all of these stories unfolding at once -- including a host of anecdotal material McAdoo delivers before the real goods are dragged out of him -- Vanderhaeghe has allowed himself plenty of room for postmodern cleverness.
Critic Linda Hutcheon has suggested that postmodern Canadian novels are usually written as "historiographical metafiction," with alternate mythologies and competing versions of events undermining the narrative even as it is being constructed.
Using this broad definition, The Englishman's Boy qualifies as postmodern, but Vanderhaeghe has also intuited that the average reader's patience has been sorely taxed by writerly self-indulgence in recent years.

 Mormon Philosophy & Theology
Unlike you, McMurrin did not see positivism as an all-or-nothing proposition, and that is the source of you misunderstanding him.
The problem is that you want to use him for rhetorical effect, but the real McMurrin does not fit so neatly into your fiction (or should we call it "historiographical metafiction"?).
In your previous post, you also misrepresented McMurrin when you explained: "When McMurrin states that his position is "florvored' by positivism, he is a positivist who also adheres to a number of other philosophical positions." That might be Goff's way of interpreting it, but not McMurrin's.
