Fat Amy - A Brief History
I first discovered the band in mid '95, by virtue of a non-album track called "Awake" appearing on a compilation album which I had purchased because of an XTC song on it that The Verve Pipe had recorded.
Fat Amy was a band founded in the early 90s by Michigan State student Bob Guiney and several of his friends.
The band continued to tour relentlessly throughout 1998, drawing crowds all over the midwest, with trips to both coasts and to the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Conference in Austin, Texas.

In The Verve journalist Martin Clarke examines the rollercoaster history of the band, tracing its origins and early influences as well as the riotous tour behaviour, poor mental and physical health and internal conflicts which led it to implode within an inch of stardom in 1995.
Urban Hymns is now one of the fastest selling British albums of all time, garnering The Verve three wins at the BRIT awards, including Best British Band.

Spotlight on THE ASYLUM STREET SPANKERS
Instead, they rely on their considerable chops and a heaping helping of verve as they jaunt merrily from one idiom to another, sometimes several in the space of a single song.
What might be a mess of conflicting forms, sounds and styles in the sweaty palms of lesser players, becomes, in the Spankers disciplined hands, a seamless, spellbinding and often hilarious history lesson in American music.
This massive repertoire, the Spankers¹ reflexively subversive sense of humor and an improvisational bent so brave it verges on recklessness have earned the band a rapidly growing international reputation as one of the most entertaining and musically satisfying groups performing today.

 Starsailor
From the quintessentially rock title to the Verve-esque strings this is a track steeped in musical history without being in thrall to it.
Spector's touch is plain to see in the sparkling sheen which covers the song from start to finish but it's very much Starsailor's tune; Walsh's subtly acrobatic vocal sees to that.
With their eagerly awaited second album on the cusp of release, Starsailor vocalist James Walsh and bassist James 'Stel' Stelfox dropped by for a live session and interview with Zoë Ball.

 John Scofield - Verve Records
John Scofield's earliest memory of the late musical genius Ray Charles goes back to his childhood in the early '60s, when he heard the song "Hit the Road Jack" on the radio.
One of Scofield's first choices, the inimitable New Orleans singer-pianist Dr. John, was someone with whom the guitarist already had a long, rich history: Scofield played gigs with Dr. John in the '80s, and both had appeared together on albums.
As for the rest of the starry vocal roster, Scofield says that in many cases, the songs he had in mind dictated his choices.

Carnival of Light is a progressive, guitar-driven melodic album that compares favourably with the best of the Stone Roses, Charlatans, and The Verve type material.
Recorded at a tense time in the band's (rapidly ending) history, _CoL_ was, in many ways, a departure from previous efforts such as _Nowhere_ and _Going Blank Again_ (which some critics believe firmly put the band under the early '90s "shoegazer" label).
Still, this album has some lush standouts (although apparently divided by Mark's songs on the first part of the album, followed...

The History of Rock Music. Coldplay: biography, discography, reviews, links
The EP Safety (Coldplay, 1998), containing the first version of Bigger Stronger, the single Brothers And Sisters (Fierce Panda, 1999) and the five-song EP The Blue Room (Parlophone, 1999), with High Speed and Don't Panic, showcased a kinder, gentler form of Brit-pop.
Coldplay, led by singer Chris Martin and guitarist Jonny Buckland, is the English band that, at the end of the decade, summarized everything that Brit-pop had produced, from Verve's melincholia to Radiohead's retro-futurism, from Smiths sweet condescension to Suede's decadent vein.
Despite the fact that their hit single, Yellow, relies on yet another catchy, upbeat refrain, songs like the majestic, stately, anthemic Everything's Not Lost and the tracks already published on EP present a fresh and sober take on melodic rock.
