History of American football - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The history of American football is an important part of both the culture of the United States and the broader history of various football games around the world, in which a ball is kicked at a goal and/or or carried over a line.
Football caught on among the general population and began to be the subject of intense competition and rivalry, albeit of a localised nature.
American football became popular in various countries after World War II, especially those in which there were large numbers of U.S. military personnel, who often formed a substantial proportion of the players and spectators.

American Football League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The American Football League (AFL) was a professional league of American football that operated from 1960 to 1969.
In contrast to such entities as the All-America Football Conference, baseball's Federal League, the American Basketball Association and the World Hockey Association, the American Football League is the only league in North American pro sports ever to have merged with a major league and have all its teams continue to exist.
The American Football League took advantage of the burgeoning popularity of football by locating teams in major cities that lacked NFL franchises, and by using the growing power of televised football games (bolstered with the help of major network contracts, first with ABC and later with NBC).

American football descends from a rowdy medieval game in which, typically, the men, women, and children of one village attempted to kick, throw, or carry a ball across fields and streams to the fiercely defended portals of another village's parish church.
Americans had occasionally played some forms of the premodern game, but the first intercollegiate contests occurred November 6, 1869, when Rutgers defeated Princeton in soccer by a score of 6-4, and May 15, 1874, when Harvard and McGill played to a scoreless tie in rugby.
Professional football, born in the 1890s, came to maturity under the leadership of George Halas, principal founder of the National Football League (nfl; 1920).

Some historians have gone so far as to call the Oneidas' victories the first games of American football, maintaining the hybrid Boston Game was neither soccer nor rugby and, therefore, was what Americans recognize as their favorite autumn sport.
To call the Oneidas the inventors of American football is surely giving the little devils more than their due.
Although the Boston Game can't be placed any higher on football's evolutionary ladder, it seems fair to say that the Oneidas themselves exerted an important influence on the eventual course of American football, particularly because several of the boys grew up and took their game with them to Harvard.
