History of Australia (1788-1850) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The history of Australia from 1788-1850 covers the early colonies period of Australia's history, from the first English settlement and penal colony at Port Jackson in 1788 to the establishment of other colonies and the spread of settlers.
The European population of Australia during this period was mostly male; female convicts and free settlers were in a distinct minority, and were greatly in demand because of this.
The primary split in the population during this period was between convicts, free settlers, and Indigenous Australians.

Australia was usually portrayed as a remote and unattractive land for European settlement, but for Great Britain it had strategic and, after the loss of the American colonies (1783), socio-economic value.
