For most people the Shankill is a tough, hard working and mainly loyalist community which came into being as a result of the growth of Industrial Belfast in the 19th Century, but the Shankill’s history goes much further back than that.
Most people on the Shankill (and even those who were reared there and moved away for various reasons) while not condoning murder, would understand the reasons for the retaliation on IRA sympathisers, as these reasons are bred in the history and myths of the Shankill.
I suppose someone could say that these are the same people who contributed and supplied the gunmen and bombers for the UVF and UFF to commit murder on the Nationalist people of the Falls and Ardoyne districts of Belfast, and that would be a statement no one could dispute.
