One can well imagine that games have been played throughout human history, beginning as soon as there was a moment of leisure time not devoted to survival -- and as soon as communications between individuals got beyond the basics of conveying elementary needs and movement, into the realm of intention and ideas.
It's a fact that games are played between babies and their parents from the first months of life, beginning with peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake and working up to hide-and-seek just as soon as a toddler is mobile.
The Game of Go ("Wei-qi" in its original Chinese form) enjoys a special place in board game history, because not only is it one of the oldest games known, it has kept essentially the same rules for longer than any other board game out there.

The Oxford History of Board Games is a very dry read, and is exactly the type of book that turned me off of history in high school (an interest later rekindled in college).
This is less a history of board games than a survey of them.
I have greater interest in modern games than in abstracts, and I was disappointed that the former were given such passing attention.

The wall is an ideal launchpad for the museum's touring exhibition, subtitled Around the World in 18 Games; the bored, cold soldiers defending the wall distracted themselves from the rain, mist, and their lack of warm socks - a letter pleading for more survives - by scratching game boards into the stones.
The curator of the exhibition is Irving Finkel, an expert on board games, whose knowledge extends to the 4,600-year-old Royal Game of Ur, whose rules he learned by reading them from a cuneiform-inscribed clay tile.
