The History of Canadian Animation involves a considerable element of the realities of a country neighbouring the United States and the formidable competition from Hollywood.
Animation was essentially an afterthought, but an initial and short-lived period of co-production with the Walt Disney Company in the making of animated propaganda films helped establish a core of animators who continued production after Disney withdrew.
The Ottawa International Animation Festival which takes place every fall in Ottawa Ontario is one of the largest and most respected animation festivals for drawing professional, commercial, independent and amateur animators and animation enthusiasts alike from all over the world.

With the release in 1998 of Gene Walz’s Cartoon Charlie and the recent Cartoon Capers: The History of Canadian Animators by Karen Mazurkewich however, it appears, much to the chagrin of tree huggers everywhere, that a few more trees are leaving the forest.
Virtually no Canadian voice of the past is left unheard and readers are presented with a decent overview of animation beyond the National Film Board of Canada.
Understandably selling a book on Canadian animation to a general audience is a tough task that needs glossy pictures, an easy to read style, a loopy, "cartoony" cover, and proof that we’ve been accepted by focusing on Canadians who have made it in Hollywood.

This history is not definitive in nature and some of the you, the readers, may feel that I have omitted certain animators, inventors, or creative works.
This history was formed by using a number of resources and in fact there may be instances where I may have made enteries that may be in conflict by a year or two.
The SCANIMATE computer animation was unveiled which allowed original art to be transferred to the computer cathode-ray tube by a television camera which permitted images to be resized, rotated, and manipulated.

This prompted Canadian publishers to fill the gap and create their own characters, including my favourite Johnny Canuck and Nelvana from whom the famous animation studio took its name.
That in itself is kind of fascinating, since it was a temporary, artificial, accidental government-created boon to the industry, the likes of which we haven't seen since.
