Charles Darwin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Darwin suffered from sea-sickness during the eighteen months he was at sea, in October 1833 caught a fever in Argentina, and in July 1834 returning from the Andes down to Valparaiso fell ill and spent a month in bed.
Darwin remained more comfortable with the respectability of his friends the Whig Cambridge Dons, even though his ideas were pushing beyond their belief that natural history must justify religion and social order.
Darwin considered Malthus's argument, that human populations breed beyond their means and compete to survive, in relation to his findings about species relating to localities, earlier enquiries into animal breeding, and ideas of Natural "laws of harmony".

Charles Darwin - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Charles Robert Darwin (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist whose revolutionary theory laid the foundation for both the modern theory of evolution and the principle of common descent by proposing natural selection as a mechanism.
Darwin had returned to a scientific world buzzing with ideas of "Transmutation of species" to account for the discoveries of extinct species, and Whig political reforms founded in the ideas of Thomas Malthus.
Darwin's theory of evolution was a significant blow to creationism and notions of intelligent design prevalent among 19th century Europe.

biology - History of zoology, post-Darwin
Charles Darwin gave new stimulus and new direction to morphology and physiology, by uniting them as part of a common biological theory: the theory of organic evolution but a part of the wider doctrine of universal evolution based on the laws of physics and chemistry.
The studies which occupied Darwin himself subsequent to the publication of the Origin of Species, that is the explanations of animal and plant mechanisms, coloring, habits, which confer advantages to the individuals within a species, were only gradually being carried further in the early 20th century.
Darwin himself, influenced by the consideration of certain classes of facts which seem to favour the Lamarckian hypothesis, was of the opinion that acquired characters are in some cases transmitted.

 The Evolution of Darwin
Darwin is like Linux with a day job: By day, it stays discreetly in the background, running Mac OS X. By night, Darwin shows its open source roots: hackable, extensible, and the product of the same community, culture, and traditions that created Apache, sendmail, GNU/Linux, Mozilla, and UNIX itself.
The hybrid BSD architecture adopted by Darwin embodies its historical association with the BSD code base and underscores both the project's strong relationship with the various BSD organizations and its strong cultural affinity with the open source developer community.
Darwin is comprised of five main components: the Mach microkernel and BSD subsystem, the file system, networking, and the I/O Kit.

Darwin (according to Gillespie) operated with a methodology that came to be known as "actualism," whereby the existence of uniform and lawful causes of phenomena in nature are assumed.
Darwin clearly anticipates that he will be taken to task by a good many of his fellow naturalists for proposing a speculative theory, as it was not the fashion at the time for British naturalists to propose theories (they left that to the French and German speaking Europeans).
Darwin is concerned about the lack of fossils before the Cambrian, and seeks to explain it in terms of the wearing away of the earlier strata.

The malevolence of natural forces was tragically demonstrated to Darwin's new settlers in 1875 when the ship Gothenburg, en route from Darwin to the east coast, sank off north Queensland during a cyclone.

Destructive cyclonic storms were recorded in Darwin itself in 1878 and again in 1881, but these were mild events compared with the "great hurricane" which hit the town on 6 January 1897.
