To the east of Hertfordshire is Essex, to the west is Buckinghamshire and to the north are Bedfordshire, Luton and Cambridgeshire.
Hertfordshire was originally the area assigned to a fortress constructed at Hertford under the rule of Edward the Elder in 913.

At that time nobody had ever seen Hertfordshire from the air it was nearly 20 years (1784) before Vincent Lunardi made the first ever trip over England in a balloon and landed in Standon.

Hertfordshire Natural History Society was founded in 1879, having previously been called the Watford & District Natural History Society.
Webb, who had co-authored the first Hertfordshire "Flora" in 1849 with W. Coleman, survived just long enough to be a founder member of the Society.
