One of the most renowned portrait painters of the day, a Jerseyman Sir John Millais, painted her and when the portrait, "A Jersey Lily", was first exhibited at The Royal Academy Lillie was already so famous that the picture had to be roped off to protect it from the crowds who flocked to view.
Sir Walter Raleigh, who was governor of Jersey between 1600 and 1603, named it Elizabeth Castle, after his Queen, Elizabeth I. At first the fact that the castle was enclosed by the rising tide for seven out of every twelve hours was seen as an advantage.
Elizabeth Castle was sold to the Jersey government in 1923 and apart from the period of German occupation during the Second World War its only use has been as a historical monument and more recently as a venue for civic marriages.

On the 28th Jan. 1820, an act to incorporate the City of Jersey, in the county of Bergen, was passed; under which, and the various supplements and amendments thereto since passed, this city has continued to this time.
From the magnitude of the public works terminating at this point, Jersey City must fast increase in importance and population, being closely allied to New York, (distant one mile,) with which communication is had every 15 minutes, by a line of excellent ferry-boats, nowhere4surpassed.

Being so close to France, Jersey was invaded several times by the French over the ensuing centuries with possession of the island switching back and forth between the English and French six times.
In the fifteenth century, Jersey was occupied by the French for seven years who took control of the castles, many of which had origins from Norman times.

East Jersey was dominated by Calvinism, implanted by Scottish and New England settlers, while in West Jersey the Quakers soon developed a landed aristocracy with strong political and economic influence.
New Jersey was hard hit by recession in the early 1990s and the state suffered from overdevelopment, but increasing economic diversity had fueled a recovery by the decade's end.

We have just published a scan of a "broadside" (poster) of an 1840 report of the Poor-House Establishment of the Township of Hillsborough, Somerset County, New Jersey.
This beautiful memorial (with individual names inscribed) is being dedicated in a ceremony to mark the re-interment of these remains in a beautiful cemetery.
