Kansas, as part of the Louisiana Purchase, was annexed to the United States in 1803 as unorganized territory.
In this context, the region claimed by the Kansa Nation was ceded to the United States by the treaty of June 1825, and the Kansa tribe was thereafter limited to a specific reservation.
The original borders of Kansas Territory were from the Missouri border to the summit of the Rocky Mountain range; the southern boundary was the 37th parallel, the northern was the 40th parallel.

 A History of Kansas City, Missouri
The City of Kansas area got a strong taste of the Civil War during the Battle of Westport Oct. 21-23, 1864, said to be the largest and most decisive Union-Confederate clash in Missouri.
The Kansas City stockyard was founded in 1870, and the Kansas City Livestock Exchange there, in its heyday early in the 20th century, was the largest building in the world devoted exclusively to livestock interests.
Kansas City by the beginning of World War I had grown to 248,000 persons, no small part of which was due to an annexation approved by voters April 6, 1909, that more than doubled the size of the city -- from 25.4 square miles to 59.7 square miles.

 Kansas Brewing History
Kansas Germans (the state's largest foreign born ethnic group) also maintained that state prohibition deterred Germans from settling in Kansas; a claim that cannot easily be substantiated because voters approved statewide prohibition in 1880, the same year German emigration to the United States began dropping off after a peak.
As Clara Francis wrote in her 1916 overview of prohibition in Kansas, the movement was not "a sudden uprising of people," nor the result of "a few fanatics." Instead, the vote reflected "a crystallization of the slowly developed sentiment t', held by many voter factions and nationalities resentful of the unruly behavior that saloons spawned.
Kansas breweries had a head start on neighboring states, sold fresh beer profitably, and stood a chance as many small, local breweries in other states did-to quench the local and regional beer drinker's thirst along with the giants of the brewing industry if not for state prohibition in 1881.

The south side of the Kansas River was settled by the Shawnee Indians in 1823.
