Melbourne, named after British Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne, was first settled by a group of settlers led by John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner, Batman had earlier explored Port Philip Bay and landed near the Yarra River and decided "this will be a place for a village" on the 10th of May 1835.
Melbourne grew steadily during the early 1900's and the new immigration policy of the Australian government of the time that promoted Australia across Europe to help boost the population worked wonders.
Melbourne was home to the 1956 Olympics games, the first to be held in the southern hemisphere and it was around this time until the 1970s that Melbourne's population began to stabilise as Sydney was recognized as Australia’s largest city.

Melbourne became prime minister in 1834 and again in 1835 - 1839 and 1839 - 1841.
When the young Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837, she and Melbourne developed a close relationship, with the prime minister tutoring the new queen in government and politics.

 Melbourne's Tramway History.
The second electric tramway in Melbourne's suburbs was opened on the 11th October 1906 and ran from Flemington Bridge (near the terminus of the North Melbourne cable tram route) to Essendon, with a branch to Saltwater River (Now Maribyrnong River) and a short spur along Puckle St Moonee Ponds, to Moonee Ponds railway station.
The lease of the cable trams by the Melbourne Tramways and Omnibus Co. expired on 30th June, 1916 and it was decided to appoint an interim Melbourne Tramways Trust to operate the system until it was decided what to do about the growing problems of street passenger transport in the Melbourne metropolitan area.
An overall scheme for Melbourne's tramways wsa prepared, and the decision taken to convert the cable trams to electric traction.
