Near the geographic center of North America, it is bordered on the north by the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario, on the west by North Dakota and South Dakota, on the south by Iowa, and on the east by Wisconsin and Lake Superior.
Minnesota is also known as the North Star State, a translation of the French inscription on the state seal, L’Etoile du Nord.
In 2000 the population of Minnesota was 89.4 percent white.

She pursues research on the interface of science with American culture, particularly the practice of science in those institutions where there was a persistent and evident relationship with the larger society.
In recent years her investigation includes the participation by women and the impact such participation has had on the practice of science; this has led to her active role in the American Women Scientists' Encyclopedia Britannica Web Page (March-May, 1998).

 Minnesota State History - SHG Resources
Following the visits of several French explorers, fur traders, and missionaries, including Jacques Marquette, Louis Joliet, and sieur de la Salle, the region was claimed for Louis XIV by Daniel Greysolon, sieur Duluth, in 1679.
Soon afterward, at Traverse des Sioux and Mendota with the Dakota Indians whereby the Dakota ceded their lands east of the Red River, Lake Traverse, and the Big Dakota River and south of a boundary line between the Dakota and Chippewa in 1825.
Minnesota eventually provides 24,000 men for service in the Union Army for fighting in the Civil War or the Indian Outbreak.
