Montserrat was born in the late sixties, a time when people were questioning the status quo and seeking new solutions.
In the early years, Montserrat School of Visual Arts, as it was then called, offered a professional diploma in the same studio concentrations for which it is known today.
By 1990, Montserrat had outgrown its original facility and moved to historic downtown Beverly, into the Hardie Building, a newly renovated, nineteenth century building with expanded teaching facilities.

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory was established soon after the first phreatic eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano on 18th July 1995 and was staffed initially by scientists from a variety of organisations working with local personnel.
Montserrat is situated in the northern part of the Lesser Antilles, which is a volcanic island arc formed along the junction where the Atlantic tectonic plate is subducted beneath the Caribbean plate.

While convenient for a sequential presentation, it is not particularly suited for in-depth examination of large and important subjects that span large portions of Montserrat's history, such as slavery or the labor movement.

I went to Montserrat then with a firm view, that I would make clear the significance of Jim Allen, the master Leewards batsman as artist, not just in the history of Montserrat, or the Leewards, but the Caribbean.
I contend that Montserrat ruined by hurricanes before 1924, again in 1924 and 1928 and then again in 1989; then frightfully structurally adjusted by pyroclastic flows from the Soufriere volcano belching hell fire with atomic force in 1997 could only have survived and stayed in place, largely due to cricket.
Besides, the tragedies which afflicted Montserrat, together with his personal tragedies require him to keep his sanity, by avoiding, as politely as possible, occasions which may well be trauma inducing.

It is known that Montserrat was first settled not by the English but by a group of disaffected Irish Catholics from the nearby St. Kitts in 1633 (Le Page, 1957-8: 55; Fergus, 1975: 7-12; [Fergus, 1994: 16-35]).
My observations are based partly on a five-week visit to Montserrat in 1977-8 and partly on extensive acquaintance with Montserratians in the United Kingdom (where, incdientally, there are proportionately more West Indians from Montserrat than from any other territory (Philpott, 1977: 90)).
In Montserrat it has also been applied as the name of a kind of tree, but this is not a meaning associated with the source form, bainne clabair.
