Northumberland is called the "cradle of Christianity" in England because it was on Lindisfarne, a tidal island north of Bamburgh, also called Holy Island, that Christianity flourished when monks from Iona were sent to convert the English.
Northumberland became a sort of wild county, where outlaws and border reivers hid from the law, as it was largely rural and unpopulated.

The term Northumberland is first used in its contracted modern sense in 1065 in an entry in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle relating to the northern rebellion.
By statute of 1495-1496 the lordship of Tynedale was annexed to Northumberland on account of flagrant abuses of the liberties of the franchise; the liberty of Hexham was annexed to Northumberland in 1572; Norhamshire, Islandshire and Bedlingtonshire continued to form detached portions of Durham until 1844, when they were incorporated with Northumberland.
From the Norman Conquest until the union of England and Scotland under James I and VI, Northumberland was the scene of perpetual inroads and devastations by the Scots.

It is not widely known that the county of Northumberland has an official tartan and moreover that this tartan is held by many to be one of the oldest check patterns, predating the more colourful Highland tartans which followed it.
The Northumberland Tartan, variously known as the Border or Shepherd Plaid, is also closely linked to the Percy family, forming the official dress of the Duke of Northumberland's piper.
Many very old shepherd's plaids remain as treasured heirlooms in Northumberland homes and farmhouses to this day and it is still possible to obtain the Northumberland tartan as a memento of the heritage of our wonderful county of Northumberland.

In 1782 the 5th's petition to be called The Northumberland Regiment, reflecting their long standing links with the area, was granted.
Battalions of the 5th took part in the D Day landings on 6th June 1944, fighting at Oden and from Caen, and the Normandy break out to the Rhine crossing in 1945 until the final German surrender.
In late 1888 the 5th were on the North West Frontier of India and in 1898 the 5th served under Kitchener in his re-conquest of the Sudan, fighting at Omdurman.

Although in Norman times Holy Island priory became a cell of Durham Cathedral little is known of the island's history or people in the centuries following the Norman Conquest.
Not exactly what we would expect from a `Holy' Island, it seems that the islanders had inherited the rough ways of the border folk, so typical of Northumberland in those days gone by.
Today the only feature of Holy island, that suggests any involvement with the violent border history of Northumberland, is Lindisfarne Catle.
