Rutland has a somewhat interesting history relating to roads, in which connection the recollections of Washington Tucker are appropriate.
The inhabitants voted a bounty of $10 on wolves in 1803, '7, '8 and '14, and of $15 in 1805 and 1806.
The N. church in Rutland dates back in its history to about 1806 when a meeting house (said to have been the second in the county) was built in Rutland Hollow, a short distance north of the point where the Black River road leaves the Rutland Hollow road.

Rutland is and during this long period has been regarded as one of the best towns for general agricultural pursuits in all the Black river country, while almost every opportunity for profiting by its abundant water power has been accepted and improved.
The town of Rutland was created April 1, 1802, since which time its boundary lines have not been materially changed, except by the acquisition of the island at Felts' Mills, which was annexed front Le Ray by an act of the Legislature, passed April 1, 1844.
It so happened that among the pioneers of Rutland were found men of special strength and determination of character, of mental and moral worth that gave them a prominence in the region, and naturally resulted in their selection for positions of trust and responsibility.

Earl of Rutland and Duke of Rutland are titles in the peerage of England, derived from the traditional county of Rutland.
The Earl of Rutland was elevated to the status of Duke in 1703 and the titles were merged.

 Rutland: History
Otter Creek served as a junction on the military road connecting the Champlain forts to the north with the Connecticut Valley during the French and Indian War, and settlement was not attempted until that hostility ceased.
Fort Rutland was built in 1775, and in 1778 the city became the headquarters for state troops during the American Revolution.
This explosive growth is attributed to the arrival in 1849 of the railroad and the resulting boom in the marble industry, which had been operating on a small scale since the early nineteenth century.

In March, 1855, a company was formed in Rutland, Vermont, that was called the "Vermont Emigration Association." It was organized "for the purpose of settling a section of country in the west, where social, religious and civil privileges may be enjoyed".
The settlement of Rutland properly belongs to the history of LaSalle county,but as it had much to do with the early settlement of Bennington township a brief mention may be made of it here.
It was soon found that the land was not only susceptible of cultivation, but that it was extremely fertile, and the crops raised were much better than those in the timbered land, and it was but a very short time before the land was all taken up and farm houses sprung up in every direction.

 Stretton History
Stretton in Rutland forms a similar pattern of a small nuclear village within reach of, but not threatened by, the great Roman road to the north, Ermine Street.
Records of Stretton in the early medieval period are sparse, although the Calendar of Patent Rolls, quoted in the Victoria County History of Rutland, records that King Edward I stopped here twice on his way to and from Scotland, while his son, Edward II, visited in 1316.
The description of lands held ‘in the fields’ of Stretton is evidence that at this period the grant of land might comprise a number of scattered strips in each of the common fields, rather than a consolidated holding.
