Helena completed her outfitting in the Boston area and sailed 24 October 1945, arriving New York City the next day to take part in the tremendous celebration of the Navy's role in World War II victory that marked Navy Day, 27 October 1945.
Helena spent much of the spring of 1949 in training a new crew and in May cruised to train Naval Reservists, returning to Long Beach for a conversion necessary to equip her to carry a helicopter.
Helena's accurate gunnery was next sought by the 8th Army, for whom she fired at 13 targets along the bombline in aid of advancing infantry.

In the history of the East India Company, there is a constant thread of conflict between the Directors in London, with their worries of profit, loss and investment and the man at the sharp end, weeks from home, advice or help.
The fortunes of St. Helena changed drastically with the exile of Napoleon: a large garrison was established on the island and naval ships were on constant patrol in case of a rescue attempt.

The British garrisoned the island in 1815 to prevent a rescue of Napoleon from Saint Helena and it served as a provisioning station for the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron on anti-slavery patrol.

Helena is a volcanic island although volcanic activity has long since ceased.
The oldest volcanic rocks on St. Helena are about 14 million years old and are exposed in the northeastern part of the island and form the Northeastern Volcanic Centre which remained active until about 11 million years ago.
When discovered in 1502, St. Helena was densely vegetated and there survive a large number of endemic plants, including 14 endemic species of fern and 6 endemic genera of flowering plants (with an additional 4 extinct genera).
