  Somerset Township
Somerset Township, originally a part of Wheatland Township became a seperate township by an act of the Legislature passed March 20, 1837.
Somerset was named for the township of the same name in Niagara County, N.Y., from which many of the early settlers in the township had emigrated, including David Herrington and Herman Pratt.
Somerset Township today because of its man made lake communities Leanne and Lake Somerset is the highest populated township in Hillsdale County.

 Somerset Texas History
Somerset was named for a settlement that had been begun in 1848, in what is now Atascosa County, by a group of Baptist families from Somerset, Kentucky.
In 1931 the Somerset Fruit Growers Exchange building was dedicated, and between truck farming, oil, and coal, the town prospered until the mid-1930s, when diminishing oil returns and the Great Depression caused a decline.
Somerset was incorporated in 1973 and has a mayor-council form of city government.

The Town of Somerset is a suburban community in Bristol County, on the west side of the Taunton River.
The dominant religious group in early Somerset were the Quakers, who established a meeting house about 1701, one of the few and earliest Quaker churches in southeastern Massachusetts.
The opening of the Somerset and Dighton Railroad led to the establishment in the town of the Old Colony's major coal port in 1872, while an enterprising former potter created a cannery operation in the early part of the 20th century.

Somerset County Cricket Club was first formed in August 1875, following a cricket match at Sidmouth between the Gentlemen of Somerset and their Devon hosts, in which the visitors were successful.
Somerset played their first 'home' match during 1882 and during that year one of the teams to pay a visit were the Australian tourists.
Initially Somerset did not enjoy first class status, but after winning the 'second-class championship' in 1890 first class status followed in 1891 and since then the Club has enjoyed a long and colourful history, with many ups and downs, both on and off the pitch.

For much of prehistory, this part of Somerset was under the sea and it is only in the last few thousand years that the land has been emerging: the area around Burnham and Highbridge has therefore been particularly vulnerable to the vagaries of sea and rivers.
Not surprisingly, the history of settlement in the area has been partly conditioned by natural and artificial changes in the coastline and the drainage pattern.
Although the main line bypassed the town, the Somerset Central was extended to Burnham by 1858 and ran onto a pier constructed for the purposes of trade, not leisure.

 WSR :: West Somerset Railway :: History    
The first railway in the area was the West Somerset Mineral Railway (WSMR), approved in the mid 1850s to construct a "narrow" (as opposed to "broad") gauge line from the iron-ore mines high on the Brendon Hills to the harbour at Watchet.
The Chairman, Sir Peregrine Fuller Palmer Acland, Bt., outlined the purpose of the meeting was to consider the building of a "Railway from the West Somerset iron-fields and coast, to the Bristol & Exeter Railway".
The West Somerset Railway Company was incorporated on 17th August 1857 by way of Act of Parliament 20 & 21 Vic Cap CXLV, and authorised to raise £120,000 to build a "14 mile 22 chain Railway 2 miles West of Taunton to Watchet" in 3 years.

Somerset is off State Highway 1604 fifteen miles southwest of San Antonio in Bexar County.
The population of Somerset increased gradually during the late 1960s and 1970s, topping 1,000 in 1978.
In 1990 Somerset reported 1,144 residents, many of whom worked in farming, ranching, and oilfield drilling and maintenance; in addition, a great number worked in San Antonio or surrounding areas.
