History of cricket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cricket's most likely birthplace is the Weald, an area of dense woodlands and clearings in south-east England that lies across Kent and Sussex.
Cricket must have had agreed rules, subject to local variations, for a long time but the earliest known Laws were ratified in 1744.
It remains to be seen if the time away from Test cricket has allowed the side to settle and improve: in the first match after the suspension, Bangladesh (generally considered the worst side in Test cricket by a distance) beat Zimbabwe to record their first ever Test victory.

Test cricket is the longest form of the sport of cricket.
Test matches are played between national representative teams which have Test status, as determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and, from 2005, between a Rest of World XI and the top team in the LG ICC cricket ratings.
Test cricket's competition structure has evolved somewhat idiosyncratically due to the long match duration, cricket's status as one of the earliest professional spectator sports, and the wide geographical distribution of the teams.

Test matches are a subset of first-class cricket, the form of cricket played over several days and officially declared as First Class by the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians.
Similarly, a series of "Test matches" played in Australia between Australia and a World XI in 1971/72 are not considered to have Test status, nor are the Supertests organised by Kerry Packer as part of his World Series Cricket enterprise and played between Australia and Rest of the World teams from 1977 to 1979.
However, with the entry of more countries into Test cricket competition, and a wish by the ICC to maintain public interest in Tests (which was flagging in many countries with the introduction of one-day cricket), a new system was added to Test match competition.

In the fourth Test at Trent Bridge Australia was again outplayed and forced to follow-on for the first time in 191 Test matches and eighteen years.
Australia needed to win the fifth and final Test at The Oval to retain the Ashes but were hampered by bad weather, a strong England bowling performance on the fourth day and fine England rearguard batting (led by Kevin Pietersen) on the final day before the match ended in a draw.

He was the finest slip fielder of his time, and in county cricket a good enough hard-hitting batsman to score two centuries for Surrey and average 25 in 1887.
In the Second Test at the SCG, Lohmann became the first bowler to take eight wickets in a Test innings, and in the abnormally dry summer of 1887 showed himself far ahead of any other bowler - taking 154 wickets when the next best was 114.
During this series Lohmann twice broke the record for best analysis in Test cricket: he took 15 for 45 in the first Test, and, after not being put on initially in the second, he became the first bowler to take nine wickets in a Test innings.
