The team was not so strong as could have been wished, and though they did fairly well in Australia, they lost all three " test matches" against New Zealand.
Scotland commenced playing Ireland in 1877 and Wales in 1883, while Ireland and Wales met first in 1882 and then in 1884, and since 1887 have played annually.

Test matches in the 19th century in the period to 1883 were organised somewhat differently from international cricket matches today.
Bannerman scored the first single in Test history of Alfred Shaw 's second ball, was dropped on 10, and had scored 27 by the time lunch was taken at 2pm, with the Combined XI 42 for 3.
The first match against a Combined Australia XI was billed as the "Grand Combination Match", and was to be held at the ground at East Melbourne, as the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) had been booked by GF Grace.

According to H.S. Altham in A History of Cricket "the defeat of the MCC was a nine-days' wonder, and made the reputation of the Australians at a single stroke".
The velvet bag, embroidered with the inscription '1883', is now believed to have been made later by Mrs Annie Fletcher, wife of a NSW cricket official, with the express intention of holding the urn, and presented to Bligh at a later date.
The earliest radio broadcasts of Test matches took place during the 1924-25 series, and by 1932-33 cricket fans in the Australian capital cities as well as some regional centres were able to listen to ball-by -ball commentaries of each Test.

Gregory was also the captain of the New South Wales team that were involved in the infamous Sydney Riot of 1879 after he rebelled against an unpopular decision by Victorian umpire George Coulthard during a game against the touring English team.
He was part of a proud cricketing family, with four of his brothers and three of his nephews representing New South Wales at first-class level, while some time after retiring from playing in 1883 he was made honorary secretary of the New South Wales Cricket Association.
For this fact alone, he will be forever remembered through cricket's history.
