The Kingdom of Thailand, previously known as Siam, is situated in the heart of Southeast Asia with Bangkok as the capital city.
Thailand, with its shape resembling a head of an elephant, is around 198,114 square miles, or roughly the size of the state of Texas.
Thailand is divided into four natural regions: the north, northeast, the central plain, and the south.

We then hear how Thailand avoided colonization by one by one putting off the European powers, first the UK, then France, then Holland, etc. Finally, the modern period is covered, with the move of the capital to Bangkok in 1782 and the beginning of the Chakri dynasty.
The history of the area has been rife with war and intra-region political conflict and intrigue, and yet somehow this is one of the most boring books I have ever read.
If you are looking for a general overview of the history of this area of the world with a focus on Thailand, then this is a very decent book with which to start.

The current History of Thailand article is full of errors and irrelevancies, but I am not allowed to edit it, so I created an alternative to it to link from my User page.
I split History of Thailand since 1768 into three articles: History of Thailand (1768-1932) for the "Bangkok period" under the rule of the Rama dynasty, History of Thailand (1932-1973) for the period of military rule between the 1932 and 1973 revolutions, and History of Thailand since 1973 for the modern history.
