Herodotus prefaces his History (written in the 5th century BC) with a geographical description of the then known world: this introductory material reveals that the coastlines of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea had by then been explored.
As the coasts became well known, the seasonal character of the monsoonal winds was skillfully used; the southwest monsoon was long known as Hippalus, named for a sailor who was credited with being the first to sail with it direct from the Gulf of Aden to the coast of the Indian peninsula.
Edward Heawood, A History of Geographical Discovery in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (1912, reprinted 1965), treats the topic in a broad context.
