His son Erik XIV has a macabre historical connection to Uppsala Castle, since it was here that he executed three members of the Sture family in 1567 in connection with a power struggle between the king and the aristocracy.
The 1580s and 1590s were important periods in the history of the construction of the castle, with many architects being called in from abroad.
Its restoration was painfully slow, and furthermore the rubble came to be used as a supply of stones for the construction of the grand palace in Stockholm.

The Uppsala Astronomical Obervatory (UAO; Astronomiska observatoriet i Uppsala) is an astronomical observatory in Sweden.
It was founded in 1741, though there was a professorial chair of astronomy at the University of Uppsala from 1593 and the university archives include lecture notes in astronomy from the 1480s.

On April 10 1848, a letter was sent in support of the students of Copenhagen and the letter was signed ”Upsala Studentcorps.” The signature ”Upsala Studentcorps” referred to the whole body of Uppsala student nations’ members, and this event is considered the foundation of the forming of the student union.
Uppsala student union officially apologised in 1999 for the union’s behaviour during the 1930s.
