Aboriginal society in Victoria, having survived for thousands of years, was to be almost destroyed in a single generation after 1835.
The first foreign military action by the colony of Victoria was to send troops and a warship to New Zealand as part of the Maori Wars.
In 1901 Victoria ceased to be an independent colony and became a state in the Commonwealth of Australia.

Constitutional history began in 1849 with the creation by the Imperial Government of the Crown Colony of Vancouver Island and on March 11, 1850, Richard Blanshard formally assumed office as Governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island.
The life of the little community of Victoria, numbering 450 men, women and children in 1853, centered in the business of the Hudson's Bay Company until 1858 when gold was discovered on the mainland of British Columbia.
With the Fraser Valley gold rush in 1858, Victoria grew rapidly as the main port of entry to the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia.

The Victoria History of the Counties of England, commonly known as the Victoria County History or the VCH, is an English history project begun in 1899 in honour of Queen Victoria with the aim of creating an encyclopaedic history of each of the traditional counties of England.
In general the histories begin with some details of the County as a whole, before surveys of each Hundred.
The first volume was published in 1901 and publication continued slowly throughout the twentieth century but eventually ground to a halt.

The Victoria Barge Canal was the outgrowth of the original Intracoastal Canal Association established locally in 1905; Congress did not authorize the construction of a barge canal, except for the dredging of the Guadalupe River, until 1945.

Queen Victoria used St George's Chapel to an extent as a family chapel and in March 1863, during the early days of her widowhood, she chose the chapel as the place for the marriage of her son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, to Princess Alexandra of Denmark.
In 1863 Queen Victoria also converted the tomb house, partly built by Henry VII on the site of the original chapel, into a memorial chapel to Prince Albert.
Queen Victoria's funeral in 1901 took place in the chapel, very delayed, due to the horses pulling the coffin, breaking their traces at Windsor station.

Anticipating that under the Oregon Treaty, then being drawn up, the 49th parallel would be chosen as the International Boundary Line, the Hudson's Bay Company moved its fort from Vancouver on the Columbia River to the southern end of Vancouver Island.
Then miners and adventurers from the gold fields of California and Australia, and indeed from all parts of the world, flocked to Victoria which was the only ocean port and outfitting centre for the gold fields of the Caribou.
In 1859 government buildings were constructed at James Bay, south Fort, and christened "The Birdcages." In continuous use for almost forty years (except for the brief period 1866-68 when New Westminster, not Victoria, was the capital) they were replaced in the 1890's by the present Parliament Buildings, completed late in 1897.

Her fist husband, Harrison Dunbar, was shot to death in Victoria as a result of a local dispute.
Shortly after reaching Wichita, however Margaret died of "trail fever" and "congestion of the brain." Her body was returned to Victoria and buried in the Evergreen Cemetery.
