Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, whose unexpectedly high demands were perceived as humiliating in Germany, as a continuation of the war by other means and a breaking of traditional post-war diplomacy that included negotiations between the victors and vanquished.
Germany is located in Central Europe and shares borders with Denmark in the North, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the West, Austria and Switzerland in the South and Poland and the Czech Republic in the East.

History of the German Democratic Republic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The division of Germany was made clear with the currency reform of 20th June 1948, which was limited to the western zones.
Although détente offered East Germany the opportunity to overcome its isolation in foreign policy and to gain Western recognition as a sovereign state, the SED leader was reluctant to pursue a policy of rapprochement with West Germany.
West Germany was East Germany's supplier of high-quality consumer goods, including luxury items, and the latter's citizens frequented both the Intershops, which sold goods for Western currency, and the Exquisit and Delikat shops, which sold imported goods for East German currency.

History of West Germany (1949 - 1990) - Federal Republic of Germany, FRG, BRD

Germany's partners in the Coal and Steel Community decided to establish a European Defence Commuity (EDC), with an integrated army, navy and air force, composed of the armed forces of its member states.

History of Germany, The Social Democratic-Free Democratic Coalition
West Germany's relations with the East European states had virtually stagnated since the establishment of the Hallstein Doctrine in the mid-1950s.
Soviet officials, however, insisted that West Berlin was not to be considered a territory belonging to the FRG and therefore was not to be governed by it.
Most West Germans saw the Soviet Union as responsible for the escalation of the arms race by their deployment of the SS-20 and, in addition, mistrusted the Soviet Union's apparently keen interest in the peace movement in Western Europe.

H-Net Review: Michael L. Hughes on Protest Movements in 1960s West Germany: A Social History of Dissent and Democracy
West Germany had not made proper provision for the myriad of students who wished, by the 1960s, to study at university.
Yet West Berlin's atypicality means historians will have to find a way to assess the scope and nature of protest in other West German cities before we can have an adequate understanding of the full range of protest in West Germany.
The greatest gap in Thomas's book is his failure to address concretely how West Germany got from the vicious attacks on protest movements and demonstrations in the 1950s and 1960s to the political culture(s) of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s that accepted protest and demonstrations as a central part of democratic politics.

Sample Chapter for Schissler, H., ed.: The Miracle Years: A Cultural History of West Germany, 1949-1968.
Currently, historians in Germany are preoccupied with the questions of what the two German dictatorships, the Nazi and the Communist past, might have in common and what consequences should be drawn from the legacies of those "two German pasts." This debate is thoroughly overdetermined by West German intellectual paradigms.
While the intellectual detachment in the writing of history that was the ideal of previous generations of historians no longer is an agreed-upon norm, "the present as history" nevertheless raises particular issues that might not play a role when we research historical times that lie further back.
Section four deals with West Germany's modernity, the emergence of a consumer society, the project of "normalizing" relations between women and men in a modern industrialized society, the opposition to rearmament and nuclear weapons, and the emergence of a civil society in West Germany.

Yet few questions have been asked about the ways in which West Germans have "forgotten," unlearned, or reconstructed the racial beliefs at the core of the Nazi state in order to build a democratic society.
During a time when American occupation authorities insisted on remembrance and redress for the Holocaust, the Wild West emerged as a displaced theater of the racial imagination, where the roles of victim, avenger, and perpetrator of genocide were reassigned.
