History of education - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Education was the natural response of early civilizations to the struggle of surviving and thriving as a culture.
The curriculum of the educational insitutions of this period was frequently based around the trivium and was conducted in the clerical language of Latin.
This system of education was further developed by the early Chinese state, which depended upon literate, educated officials for operation of the empire, and an imperial examination system was established in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220) for evaluating and selecting officials.

History of education in Japan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Education of commoners was generally practically oriented, providing basic training in reading, writing, and arithmetic, emphasizing calligraphy and use of the abacus.
In the early twentieth century, education at the primary level was egalitarian and virtually universal, but at higher levels it was multitracked, highly selective, and elitist.
Despite the numerous educational changes that have occurred in Japan since 1868, and especially since 1945, the education system still reflects long-standing cultural and philosophical ideas: that learning and education are esteemed and to be pursued seriously, and that moral and character development are integral to education.

 The History of Education
The goal of education in the Greek city-states was to prepare the child for adult activities as a citizen.
Humanist education was primarily enlivened by the addition of Greek to the curriculum and an emphasis on the content of Greek and Roman literature.
This was the school and these were the methods developed by Pestalozzi in accordance with his belief that the goal of education should be the natural development of the individual child, and that educators should focus on the development of the child rather than on memorization of subject matter that he was unable to understand.

CCH - CE Links: 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica on the History of Education
The instruments of education everywhere found to be in harmony with the Greek conception of life and culture were essentially twofold -- music, or literary and artistic culture, for the mind, and systematic gymnastic for the body.
But this restoration of the means of education was only partial, and the doctrine of the worthlessness of carnal knowledge, which led the Barebones Parliament to propose the suppression of the English universities, was held by many fervent Protestants both in England and in Germany all through the 17th century.
The later humanist theories of education, which the schools continued to follow generally for over two centuries, and in many cases for another hundred years after that, were drawn mainly from Erasmus and Melanchthon, who found in the classical languages and literatures, and especially in Latin, the only essential instruments of education.
