History of feminism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The history of feminism reaches far back before the 18th century, but the seeds of the feminist movement were planted during the latter portion of that century.
Radical feminism was a significant development in second wave feminism, viewing women's oppression as a fundamental element in human society and seeks to challenge that standard by broadly inverting perceived gender roles along with promoting lesbian and gay rights.
Outside of the West, feminism is often associated with Western colonialism and Western cultural influence, and is therefore often delegitimized.

Feminism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Feminism is a diverse collection of social theories, political movements, and moral philosophies, largely motivated by or concerning the experiences of women, especially in terms of their social, political, and economic situation.
Feminism as a philosophy and movement in the modern sense may be usefully dated to The Enlightenment with such thinkers as Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and the Marquis de Condorcet championing women's education.
Feminism became an organized movement in the 19th century as people increasingly came to believe that women were being treated unfairly.

To support her claim that feminism is alive and well, Freedman cites the trend toward more natural childbirth practices, more enlightened policies on rape and sexual harassment, the growth of women's athletics and the adoption of more family-friendly policies by corporations and government.
Freedman's account of US women's history is rich in personal testimonies of women downtrodden by their alleged champions (the League of Women Voters and the YWCA were honourable exceptions.) Cracks in sisterhood widened after the rebirth of radical feminism at the time of the civil rights movement.
Freedman has no totalizing theory of feminism that encompasses the many feminisms, nor are her particular narratives presented as unique; to integrate the general with the historically specific, she glides between the extremes of grand theory and local experience.

 Topics in Feminism
Feminism is both an intellectual commitment and a political movement that seeks justice for women and the end of sexism in all forms.
Although the term "feminism" in English is rooted in the mobilization for woman suffrage in Europe and the US during the late 19th and early 20th century, of course efforts to obtain justice for women did not begin or end with this period of activism.
Feminism is grounded on the belief that women are oppressed or disadvantaged by comparison with men, and that their oppression is in some way illegitimate or unjustified.

Feminism encompasses some widely differing views, however, including those that advocate female separatism.
Modern feminism, which was born with the great democratic revolutions of the 18th century (American and French), differed from its precursors in applying the democratic implications of “the rights of man and the citizen” to women as a group.

In Puerto Rico during the second half of the nineteenth century an agenda for progress and nation building addressed the status of the rural population, including women, among whom illiteracy was common.
Despite the dramatic changes experienced in Puerto Rico since industrialization and modernization, sexism and male chauvinism ingrained in the concept of machismo are still deeply rooted in cultural and social patterns and in institutions; these attitudes continue to deprive women of true equality.
Major issues related to the experience of Puerto Rican women, in both the island and the United States, are now a major focus of research and public policy.
