The history of association football can be traced back into ancient times, but the modern game has its roots firmly in the traditional football games played at the public schools of England.
Football had come to be adopted by a number of public schools as a way of encouraging competitiveness and keeping youths fit.
Italian football was played in regional groups from its foundation in 1898 until 1929 when the Serie A was organized into a national league by the Italian Football Federation.

Throughout the history of mankind the urge to kick at stones and other such objects is thought to have led to many early activities involving kicking and/or running with a ball.
For example, two clubs which claim to be the world's first and/or oldest football club, in the sense of a club which is not part of a school or university, are both stongholds of rugby football: the Barnes Club, said to have been founded in 1839, and Guy's Hospital Football Club, reportedly founded in 1843.
Flag football – non-tackle American football, like touch football, in which a flag that is held by velcro on a belt tied around the waist is pulled by defenders to indicate a tackle.
