Male circumcision was promoted as either a cure or a preventive procedure for a wide variety of ailments, including hernia, epilepsy, polio, cancer, syphilis and lunacy.
Too frequently, female circumcisions performed in rural villages in Africa are compared to male circumcisions in the U.S., which are almost exclusively performed in modern hospitals containing among the most sophisticated and sanitary surgical conditions available anywhere in the world.
I would argue that male circumcision originated before female circumcision and that female circumcision is largely a derived ritual that evolved in response to the privileges associated with male circumcision in male-oriented societies.

One of the accepted reasons for circumcision in the past as in the present, is for good hygienic purposes; circumcision was said to prevent such things as masturbation, which was considered a very dirty practice, and presently, urinary tract infections.
For example a few of the benefits of circumcision are a decrease in likelihood of developing phimosis, reduction of banalities (inflammation of the glans), reduced urinary tract infections (usually in the first year of life), less susceptibility to STDs and HIV/AIDS, decrease likelihood or possible elimination of penile cancer in middle age or older men.

The main reason why forcible circumcision of male minors is not seen as a serious assault in Australia is because of the long history of routine male circumcision in English-speaking countries.
Male and female circumcision was adopted and practised by physicians in Britain and the USA during the 19Th century to treat infantile phimosis (then misunderstood as an abnormality), provide protection against syphilis and an ever-growing list of incurable diseases, and to discourage masturbation in childhood and adolescence.
Britain's leading champion of routine infant circumcision was (Sir) Jonathan Hutchinson, who published a series of articles in the 1890s urging universal male circumcision as a preventive of masturbation, syphilis and cancer of the penis.
