The Union of Muslims of Russia is the direct successor to the pre-World War I Union of Muslims, which had its own faction in the Russian Duma.
The postcommunist union has formed a political party, the Nur All-Russia Muslim Public Movement, which acts in close coordination with Muslim clergy to defend the political, economic, and cultural rights of Muslims and other minorities.

Russia's best hope of keeping Chechnya in the federation in 1997 was economic leverage, because the war had left the republic decimated and without international ties and because the infrastructure already existed for Russia to restore Chechnya's most vital industry, oil refining.
Russia's nineteen railroad companies, which accounted for 78 percent of freight traffic and 40 percent of passenger traffic in 1997, were to be removed from direct control of the Ministry of Transportation, under whose management fast-rising railroad fees had added enormous amounts to the overhead of railroad-dependent industries such as steel and coal.

With Russia having had to withdraw from the Great War in 1917 because of the Bolshevik rebellion, many western nations looked to that country with fear of the new `red menace' that was being propagated by the Bolsheviks and Communists.
The Bolsheviks still controlled all of Russia and sat as an impending threat to the west and the Allies who were involved in this action were disillusioned by the weather and the need to continue fighting well after their compatriots on the Western Front had returned home.
I would have liked more attention to the pernicious role Russia's oligarchs played in beggaring the economy, and to the views of the average citizen on what was happening, but each remains a shadowy presence on a stage monopolized by politicians and economists.

Since the early 1970s, the term "Eurocommunism" was used to refer to the policies of communist parties in western Europe, which sought to break with the tradition of uncritical and unconditional support of the Soviet Union.
In Russia, the 1917 October Revolution was the first time any party with an avowedly Marxist orientation, in this case the Bolshevik Party, obtained state power.
Russia, however, was one of the poorest countries in Europe with an enormous, largely illiterate peasantry and a minority of industrial workers.

 CDI Russia Weekly #133 - December 22, 2000
Few places in Russia today better exemplify the extraordinary path of the church, from the depths of 70 years of enforced Soviet atheism - during which an estimated 200,000 clergy were systematically murdered, according to a presidential commission - to the feverish rebuilding of the past decade.
Instead of a real history of postcommunist Russia, with its genuine conflicts and insights, a mythologized, apologist picture is being created of the political process of recent years.
The longer Russia is obliged to pay off its debts, and the greater the cost of our independent foreign policy, the greater will be the temptation to take direct state control of everything that brings a profit.

Russia's place in the world and her possible global strategy were thoroughly analyzed recently by research institutes, influential independent groups like the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, and independent experts.
In summary, practical actions in the relations between Russia and the former republics of the Soviet Union-economic cooperation, military cooperation, and use of Russian troops as peacekeeping forces on the territory of the former Soviet Union-should not be interpreted as attempts to restore the Soviet or Russian empires.

Their story is skillfully embedded in a revelatory history of Poland during World War II, highlighting as never before the fierce struggle of the Poles both in and outside of Poland to regain their independence, and the tragic collapse of their dream in the “peace” that followed.

Presenting Jewish history also clarifies urban history, because Jews lived in the unincorporated "private cities" and suburbs, which historians have overlooked in favor of incorporated "royal cities."
