Israel is currently also embroiled in an ongoing conflict with Palestinians in the territories controlled since the Six Day War in 1967, despite the signing of the Oslo Accords on September 13, 1993, and the ongoing efforts of Israeli, Palestinian and global peacemakers.

 FOCUS on ISRAEL (History)
With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Jewish independence, lost 2,000 years earlier, was renewed.
There, a significant part of the nation's long history was enacted, of which the first thousand years are recorded in the Bible; there, its cultural, religious and national identity was formed; and there, its physical presence has been maintained unbroken through the centuries, even after the majority was forced into exile.
Many finds attest to the long connection of the Jewish people with the Land of Israel, including Solomon's stables at Jezreel Valley, houses of the Israelite period in Jerusalem, ritual baths at Masada, numerous synagogues and the Dead Sea scrolls, containing earliest extant copy of the Book of Isaiah in still-readable Hebrew script.

 History Of Israel
The rest of Israel's history as recorded in the Bible is a continuing cycle of blessing and punishment for Israel's obedience and disobedience to God's Law.
God's miracles for Israel, such as their dramatic deliverance from Egypt, were intended not only for the Israelites themselves, but as evidence of God's absolute power and uniqueness for a watching polytheistic world (Exodus 7:5; 14:18; Joshua 2:9-11).
As a nation, Israel was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. At that time, the Jews scattered throughout the whole world, keeping the hope based on prophetic promises of an eventual regathering to the chosen land God gave to Israel.

 History of Israel
Even the use of the term 'Israel' as a political term has its problems, and to write a 'history of Israel' as the history of an ethnic entity is simply too question-begging, as Keith Whitelam has demonstrated in his The Invention of Ancient Israel: The Silencing of Palestinian History.
Since most of the influential recent ‘Histories of Israel’ are in substance a rationalistic paraphrase of the biblical texts, scholars like Robert Carroll seems to reject any history as 'bogus history', whereas others like Niehr, Becking and Grabbe would argue that the biblical text must be used very carefully and critically.
The use of the biblical text in writing an 'History of Israel' was a controversial question in the discussions.

History of Israel: 1947 UN Partition Proposal
By May 1948, when the Jews (33%) unilaterally declared "the state of Israel", 300,000 Palestinians had already been ethnically cleansed (forced from their homes or had fled the fighting) by the Zionists and the Zionists had stolen a region well beyond the area of the original Jewish State that was proposed by the UN.
This is a critical fact often omitted when the history is presented and this leads to a very distorted view of what happened in 1948.
Now it's then that Israel was attacked by its neighbors - in May 1948; it's then, after the Zionists had taken control of this much larger part of the region and hundreds of thousands of civilians had been forced out, not before.

Amazon.com: A History of Israel : Volume II: From the Aftermath of the Yom Kippur War (History of Israel): Books: Howard M. Sachar
Since the Yom Kippur War, Israel's history has consisted of stark contrasts between dramatic military strikes abroad--Entebbe, Baghdad, Tunis among them--and confusion and violent confrontation at home over such issues as the settlement of the occupied Arab territories and religious extremism.
Both a compelling story and a penetrating analysis of Israel's current difficulties and achievements, this volume stands as a brilliant successor to a book critics and scholars have recognized as the definitive work in the field.
Covering all the dramatic milestones since the mid-seventies, Sachar explores Israel's current malaise and the extent to which the fate of the Jewish nation rests on the foreign and economic strategies of the Great Powers.
