The history of the United Nations as an international organisation has its origins in World War II.
United States president Franklin Delano Roosevelt adopted the name and the first official use of the term occurred on January 1, 1942 with the Declaration by the United Nations.
The United States Senate, by a vote of 89 to 2, gave its consent to the ratification of the UN Charter on July 28, 1945.
