I'd like to make the history a thorough one, and it certainly could not be complete without the contributions of those who have witnessed the Firefall firsthand, or of those who have followed its story and have interesting additions they'd like to share.
Regarding the history of the Firefall: As the ranger naturalists told it when we were there, at least one plausible story was that McCauley started it by burning the garbage from the Mountain House and pushing it over.
A further bit of history as it was told in the days when we were there was that the Mountain House was the oldest building in the park and the oldest continuously operating hotel in the U.S. (supposedly since 1872, as I recall).

According to the pioneers, the first interment it Yosemite Cemetery was that of a young boy drowned at Happy Isles.
The recently found manuscript of Stephen F. Glover gives the history of the eight miners, of whom Glover was one, and states that the two men killed were Sherburn and Tudor, and that Rose appeared at the mining camp a few days after the Indian attack.
The lone and unknown miner, killed by Indians in the winter of 1862, was found by J. Lamon and buried somewhere in Yosemite Valley.

In any case for keeping safe nothing beats the map and compass (altimeter is good in the Sierra also) though the books are great for armchair dreaming and making choices and every Wilderness Press product lets me hear the crunch of granite gravel under my boots like no others.

This is still the best for selecting among the hundreds of miles of Yosemite trails: but for on the trail please carry (and know how to use!!) a detailed topo map and compass and for the techies go ahead and GPS but remember batteries die.
A recent alternative to individual maps is the state CD from National Geographic / Trails Illustrated that gives you the entire state of california on your computer in zoomable, annotatable detail: then you print out what you need.
The only complaint that my husband and I have is that the estimated trail lengths might sometimes be inaccurate by a mile or so, because occasionally the numbers differed from those on the trail signs.

Later, John Muir's struggle against the devestation of the subalpine meadows surrounding Yosemite Valley resulted in the creation of Yosemite National Park on October 1, 1890.
As visitation and need for year-round services increased, Yosemite Village was relocated from a location in the floodplain on the south side of the Valley to the present Yosemite Village site on the north side.
