Message from the Chair - Undergraduate Handbook - Department of History - The Unversity of Iowa
The members of the History Faculty welcome you to the department and to the study of a subject to which we are personally and professionally devoted.
History majors, by virtue of the geographical breadth of their studies, develop a global consciousness--a historical sense of the richness and diversity of human experience--which may prove useful as they navigate the streets of Iowa City or Toronto, or Nairobi.
While a history major does not provide “training” for a specific niche in the job market, it is preparation for work and life in a world that demands flexibility and adaptation, and that often requires the rapid acquisition of new knowledge.

While chair massage is not a substitute for table massage, it is a lower rung on the ladder of skilled touch services and a much easier first step for new clients to take.
TouchPro chair massage is positioned as a simple relaxation service rather than as a "treatment" or "therapy." While there are practitioners and teachers who do define chair massage as "massage therapy," in general, I think that is a mistake.
The accessible nature of chair massage has brought it to the office and factories, to movie sets and editing studios, to street fairs and RV parks, to whitewater rafting trips and theme parks, to back stage, back lots, and back supply stores, to flea markets and food markets, and in state departments and department stores.

I believe this chair is a far better example of ergonomic seating than many chairs of today, which purport to be ergonomic simply because they boast a manual height adjustment.
Unfortunately this chair received far from positive reviews from Loudon who, when describing it in his Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture (1833), noted ‘it is important to observe that some medical men do not approve of these chairs’.
It is interesting to note that although the spring was used as early as 1740 in the Chamber horse, it was not until 1828 that Samuel Pratt patented the coiled spring for use in upholstery.

Now, as in Medieval times, the discipline of history is recognized to be highly ‘practical’ as preparation for advanced professional study and for intelligent engagement with the problems of contemporary life.
While we recognize history’s value as career preparation, we believe that our teaching succeeds most fully when students become active learners capable of questioning their own assumptions and interrogating the world around them.

A chair is a piece of furniture for sitting, consisting of a seat, a back, and sometimes arm rests, commonly for use by one person.
The chair is of extreme antiquity, although for many centuries and indeed for thousands of years it was an article of state and dignity rather than an article of ordinary use.
The chest, the bench and the stool were until then the ordinary seats of everyday life, and the number of chairs which have survived from an earlier date is exceedingly limited; most of such examples are of ecclesiastical or seigneurial origin.

The chair is made to pass from one to another of those personages of whom he thought it most desirable for the young reader to have vivid and familiar ideas, and whose lives and actions would best enable him to give picturesque sketches of the times.
It causes us to feel at once that these characters of history had a private and familiar existence, and were not wholly contained within that cold array of outward action which we are compelled to receive as the adequate representation of their lives.
