History of theology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an overview of the history of theology in Greek thought, Christianity, Judaism and Islam from the time of Christ to the present.
Throughout this period, theology tended to be a more monastic affair, flourishing in monastic havens where the conditions and resources for theological learning could be maintained.
Both because it made communication between different Christian centres easier, and because there was a concerted effort by its rulers to encourage educational and religious reforms and to develop greater uniformity in Christian thought and practice across their territories, the establishment of the Carolingian Empire saw an explosion of theological inquiry, and theological controversy.

A Concise History of Liberation Theology
The first theological reflections that were to lead to liberation theology had their origins in a context of dialogue between a church and a society in ferment, between Christian faith and the longings for transformation and liberation arising from the people.
The door was opened for the development of a theology from the periphery dealing with the concerns of this periphery, concerns that presented and still present an immense challenge to the evangelizing mission of the church.
Criticisms of certain tendencies within liberation theology, which have to be taken into account, do not negate the vigorous and healthy nucleus of this form of Christian thinking, which has done so much to bring the message of the historical Jesus to the world of today.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: History of Dogmatic Theology
Owing to his unusually solid education in theology, his extensive knowledge of the Bible and of the Fathers of the Church, he is the link which joins the patristic with the medieval history of theology.
But there can be no question that Scholastic theology owes most of its classical works to the Society of Jesus, which substantially adhered to the "Summa" of St. Thomas, yet at the same time made use of a certain eclectic freedom which seemed to be warranted by the circumstances of the times.
The suppression of the Society of Jesus by Clement XIV in 1773 deprived theology of its ablest representatives.

Different approaches to church history can often be found beneath the surface of many criticisms leveled at the emerging church; this can be especially clear when one side cites Calvin (as though that ought to clinch the argument) and the other side responds with Justin Martyr or ever Tertullion.
I think however that this whole approach to church history is flawed, and that by embracing such a view we will always deprecate periods of history which are of immense importance and, more importantly, fail to learn their lessons.
The model that I want to propose is a more dynamic understanding of church history; I view church history in as an orbital model, which plots the life of the church as though it is a planet or moon in orbit around God himself.

Throughout nearly 1900 years of Christian-Jewish history, the charge of deicide has led to hatred and violence against Jews of Europe and America, and various forms of anti-Semitic expression.
In 1988, the United States (Catholic) Bishops Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs issued a pamphlet, "Criteria for the Evaluation of Dramatizations of the Passion," which stresses that passion plays must avoid caricatures of Jews and falsely opposing Jews and Jesus.

To say that Xty is an "historical" religion is also to make a theological claim - - Xns do not venerate all alleged historical events, but only certain ones, chosen for theological reasons.
Thus "history" is a theological concept for Xty.

 Hall of Church History
As you walk through The Hall of Church History, if you veer too far to the right or to the left, you'll encounter people whose tendency has been to enshrine tradition over Scripture, or to pursue what is innovative and novel at the expense of what is sure and steadfast.
But we encourage guests to spend most of their time in the central hall, which takes you from the Church Fathers, through the Medieval Churchmen, down a narrow, treasure-filled hallway devoted to the Puritan and Reformed writers, to the more recent stalwarts of the faith.
We have named this corridor "Berean Hall," in honor of those noble recipients of the apostolic message, who "received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so" (Acts 17:11).
