Three years in development, spanning a then-amazing three discs and featuring one of the greatest development costs the industry had ever heard of at the time, Final Fantasy VII was one of the most significant releases for the PlayStation, and one of the most remembered iterations in the franchise.
While the lack of chocobos and moogles, coupled with the slow and serious atmosphere of the game definitely give it a different feel, FFVIII is still Final Fantasy through and through.
Brought to the public just as gamers got their own voice and recognition in publication over the then-obscure internet and other media, the hype over the game was so great that it was released as Final Fantasy VII (as opposed to IV), as that was the title most gamers were familiar with.

In Search of Creativity and Innovation in Video Games
It was during the 32/64-bit era that video games became the mainstream form of entertainment that they are today, and as a result, the gaming industry experienced significant economic growth.
Games console sales (excluding the portable Nintendo Game Boy systems) in the 32/64-bit era of the Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn sold around 130 million units worldwide as of 2002 - approximately twice the number of consoles sold in the 16-bit era of the Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo (Games Investor, 2002).
Games Investor tells of how Sony's "greater emphasis towards club culture and 'twenty-somethings' resulted in a much older initial Playstation user base than pervious consoles had achieved." This effectively resulted in a broader social acceptance of video games, which were often previously portrayed as things only kids or "geeks" used.

Spade Bit -- Recommendations and Resources
In the history of computer and video games, the 32-bit / 64-bit era was the fifth generation of video game consoles.
Surely the reason that they were called 8 bit consoles was because the word size of the processor was 8 bits, and 16 bit consoles had word sides of 16bits.
The number of "bits" cited in console names referred to the CPU word size, but there was little to be gained from increasing the word size much beyond 32 or 64 bits - performance depended on more varied factors, such as processor clock speed, bandwidth, and memory size.

Nintendo has been criticized as being the most "notorious video game company in history." Through their considerable influence in the market during the late 1980s, they were able to control much of the industry using intimidation, scare tactics, and price-fixing.
Although there have been many attempts to convert a video game system to a personal computer (mostly in the second generation by Amstrad) a video game system is still a system used primarily for games.
Nintendo said, "We feel that the average game player is not mature enough for a 16-bit system, and that the demand is insufficient for it to be a high priority." They were wrong.

Although these games, such as "Pitfall!" on the 2600, weren't new, they became MUCH more of the dominant style of gaming starting with the NES and continued well into the era of mid-1990's 16-bit machines.
And the pack-in game with the NES, "Super Mario Brothers", moved the emphasis of video gaming from high scores to multi-level gaming (as well as "beating", or completing, a game with a definite ending) more or less for good.
As they say, the NES was hugely popular and became the highest selling video game console of all time.
