 History of Computing: Videogames Index
However, in order to document a history pertaining to the evolution of video games, it is important to recognize the myriad influences that have the most significant relevance to the continued growth of this entertainment medium.
Though the history of video games is a subsection of the history of computing, it is important to recognize how integrated this entertainment medium is to the evolution of computing hardware and software.
Since a video game is a sensory experience, the sound, the visual elements, and the interface that the player uses to interact witht the game cannot be divorced from the programmed logic and instruction set that provides the experience.

Spade Bit -- Recommendations and Resources
In the history of computer and video games, the 32-bit / 64-bit era was the fifth generation of video game consoles.
Surely the reason that they were called 8 bit consoles was because the word size of the processor was 8 bits, and 16 bit consoles had word sides of 16bits.
The number of "bits" cited in console names referred to the CPU word size, but there was little to be gained from increasing the word size much beyond 32 or 64 bits - performance depended on more varied factors, such as processor clock speed, bandwidth, and memory size.

In summary, anyone who is either looking to purchase a book on video gaming in general, or requires a vast and detailed pool of information on the birth of the medium and the emergence of a multi-billion industry, should seriously considering purchasing this book.
With great focus shifted on the early years of the video arcade and home video gaming, this books covers in-depth the emergence of a 'craze that touched our lives and changed the world'.

Although these games, such as "Pitfall!" on the 2600, weren't new, they became MUCH more of the dominant style of gaming starting with the NES and continued well into the era of mid-1990's 16-bit machines.
And the pack-in game with the NES, "Super Mario Brothers", moved the emphasis of video gaming from high scores to multi-level gaming (as well as "beating", or completing, a game with a definite ending) more or less for good.
As they say, the NES was hugely popular and became the highest selling video game console of all time.

History of Video Games by Don Steinberg
Obsolete video games are now being re-released as "classics," discarded arcade machines and game cartridges feed a thriving collectors' market, and serious dissertation has begun to evaluate the actual importance of video games to society.
The Big Bang of the video game revolution is generally traced to November of 1972, when the first Pong machine began accepting quarters at a Sunnyvale, California bar.
When they realized that video games digested quarters more rapidly than pinball machines, they cut the number of balls per pinball game from five to three (now you know why this travesty occurred).

That is one cool thing about continuing evolution of gaming, that if one holds out long enough, someday they can get a pretty good deal on the great games of the past.

TNL Forum - Gun Games of the 8-bit Era
I love gun games and the 8-bit era was one of the healthiest ones for the genre.
The game's gimmick was that the cursor didn't appear on screen, but instead you looked through a peice of plastic mounted on the gun, through which you would be able to see you laser fire shoot toward the screen in holographic 3D.
That game was such a Ghost Busters rip off, and I was too short to use the gun in the middle, unless I stood on the seats.
