History of zoology (before Darwin)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
Comparative anatomy came into existence as a branch of inquiry apart from zoology, and it was only in the latter part of the 19th century that the limitation of the word zoology to a knowledge of animals which expressly excludes the consideration of their internal structure was rejected by scientists.
Thus mysticism was finally banished from the domain of biology, and zoology became one of the physical sciencesthe science which seeks to arrange and discuss the phenomena of animal life and form, as the outcome of the operation of the laws of physics and chemistry.
A subdivision of zoology which was at one time in favour is simply into morphology and physiology, the study of form and structure on the one hand, and the study of the activities and functions of the forms and structures of the other.

Indeed, the historical importance of this aspect or branch of zoological science was previously so great that the name zoology had until the beginning of the 20th century been associated entirely with it, to the exclusion of the study of minute anatomical structure (anatomy) and function (physiology).
Thus comparative anatomy[?] came into existence as a branch of inquiry apart from zoology, and it was only in the latter part of the 19th century that the limitation of the word zoology to a knowledge of animals which expressly excludes the consideration of their internal structure was rejected by scientists.
It is now generally recognised that it is mere tautology to speak of zoology and comparative anatomy, and that museum naturalists must give attention as well to the inside as to the outside of animals.

History: The Zoology Department at The Field Museum
At the inception of the department, its title "Department of Zoology, except Ornithology," reflected the existence of Ornithology as a separate department.
During this interval, Zoology flourished, assistant curators were appointed for the divisions of Osteology (E. Gueret in 1906), Mammalogy and Ornithology (W. Osgood in 1909), Ichthyology and Herpetology (C. Hubbs in 1916, replaced by A. Weed in 1920).
The sudden death of A. Solem in 1990 prompted the department to strengthen its commitment to invertebrate zoology.

Zoology is the biological discipline which involves the study of animals.
The original branches of zoology established in the late 19th century such as zoo-physics, bionomics and morphography, have largely been subsumed into more broad areas of biology which include studies of mechanisms common to both plants and animals.
The real dawn of zoology after the legendary period of the Middle Ages is connected with the name of an Englishman, Edward Edward Wotton, born at Oxford in 1492, who practised as a physician in London and died in 1555.

In the Arctic and Temperate zones of both the northern and southern hemispheres, the seasons are the familiar spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
At least some birds can detect ultraviolet radiations, the magnetic field of the earth, and very deep sound vibrations such as distant ocean waves, but the actual sensory mechanism by which birds translate environmental signals into navigational aids is still a puzzle.

The history of zoology is a well-established branch of the history of science, most conspicuously in relation to the development of evolutionary ideas.
Even in fields like agricultural history, where animal topics have been routine, farmyard creatures have become less likely to be abstracted through quantification, and more likely to appear as individuals, or at least groups of individuals.
Restricted game parks had a long history in Europe and in parts of Asia where their purpose had been at least as much to defend the exclusiveness of hunting as to preserve the animal targets.

Man's interest in animal life has been evident throughout history and has become a primary concern in recent decades when changes in animal populations were recognized as sensitive indicators of environmental change.
